WHEN, HOW, WHY?

PRESS RELEASE
16 SEPT. 2008
2:00PM
MERCHANT SQUARE

Today Malaysians celebrate Malaysia day – the day our country became whole and our people become united. This day has a new meaning. After years of struggle, after fighting against a system that is corrupt and unjust—we affirm that victory is finally at hand. Our vision of rebuilding this country and bringing its people together, as the founding fathers envisioned, is within reach.

The economy is in turmoil with runaway inflation and joblessness creating widespread discontent. Racial tensions have been rising, exacerbated by the propaganda spread in the government owned mainstream media. The administration has offered no vision to steer the nation out of this quagmire and there is manifest erosion in confidence in the current government.

We in Pakatan Rakyat believe we can save Malaysia from economic ruin and the dangerous politics of racism. We will do so prudently, legally and in doing so we will not jeopardize the security and stability of the country and the safety of its people.

We have received firm commitments from members of Parliament in excess of the number required to form a new government, and our government will reflect the diverse makeup of Malaysian society.

It has been our concern to ensure a peaceful transition of power. We do not wish to see a repeat of what transpired in the Selangor and Perak State governments, where following the victory of Pakatan Rakyat on March 8th, documents were shredded and removed by the outgoing administration.

We furthermore advise radical elements within BN against the abuse of state power to unlawfully harass and detain our supporters. The immediate investigation by the ACA of Dato Seri Yong Teck Lee after the announcement by SAPP of its intention to move a motion of no-confidence against Dato Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is another example of the tactics we reject. The use of the ISA, as has happened to MP Teresa Kok, would be an unlawful impediment to the transition process.

In light these serious concerns, yesterday leaders of Pakatan Rakyat sent a letter to the Prime Minister at 2:30 PM requesting a meeting to discuss the future course of the nation’s leadership and to seek his assurance on the following important matters:

1) That the BN shall not hinder or prevent their BN MPs from acting in accordance with their conscience, constitutional rights and independent judgment;

2) That the BN government shall not invoke the Internal Security Act to detain any of the MPs who will join Pakatan Rakyat, or any of the present 82 Pakatan Rakyat MPs;

3) That the BN government shall not invoke emergency or police powers, or suspend the constitution, or dissolve parliament in response to our intention to form a new government;

4) That the Barisan Nasional government shall not impose road-blocks and impede the MPs from gaining access to the House of Parliament and the institutions of government.

We believe the Prime Minister will share Pakatan Rakyat’s concerns for the welfare of the people and security of the nation. We are confident he will ensure the BN will act constitutionally and democratically to ensure that the transition will be peaceful, and there will be no actions taken to sabotage the wishes of the people or play on racial tensions in the country.

We appeal to all quarters in Malaysian society to understand our intentions are for the betterment of Malaysian society. The mainstream media, in particular, should accept the reality of these historic times and report fairly, accurately and without bias. The irresponsible tact that is used by the media to obfuscate issues, attack opposition supporters and instigate racial tensions must end immediately.

Following our meeting with the Prime Minister we intend to proceed within the framework established by the Federal Constitution in the formation of a new government, with the assent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

ANWAR IBRAHIM
Leader of Opposition

I just wonder what the thinking is behind the writing of a letter to Abdullah Badawi. Does anyone think for even the briefest moment that Abdullah Badawi will say "Oh yes thank you; since you "have the numbers" here is my seat and you can takaover now as PM". Doesn't this sound a tad naive? If you have the numbers just seek an audience with the Agong !

A friend just emailed me this article and in very brief form, I attach only the relevant part to share with you.

The author of this email is said to be Dr. Emanuel Tanay, a well known and well respected psychiatrist.

A man, whose family was German aristocracy prior to World War II, owned a number of large industries and estates. When asked how many German people were true Nazis, the answer he gave can guide our attitude toward fanaticism. 'Very few people were true Nazis,' he said, 'but many enjoyed the return of German pride, and many more were too busy to care. I was one of those who just thought the Nazis were a bunch of fools. So, the majority just sat back and let it all happen. Then, before we knew it, they owned us, and we had lost control, and the end of the world had come. My family lost everything. I ended up in a concentration camp and the Allies destroyed my factories.'

I cannot helpfeeling tinge ofdisappointment that 916 hasgoneby and that bn/badawi still in power.
With due respect to DSAI's aspirations to meet badawi ti discuss handover, it should be known to all that it will never happen. badawi will never gentlemenly handover over. I so, he would have step down earlier on.
Please DSAI, do the necessary.
We are counting on you.

It is disheartening to see that sitting Prime Minister and the Government have no respect for traditions, practices and conventions of Parliamentary Democracy.

Here is the Leader of the Opposition caliming to have the Majority of the MPs of the Dewan.

He is totally ignored and derisively dismissed by a sitting Prime Minister who strangley enough WANTs to see the list.

In a more mature Parliaments, the normal course of actions would be for the sitting Prime Minister to convene the Dewan.

A Vote of Confidence would ensues, its fall would mean the collapse of the incumbernt Government.

The Government then, resigns. The Opposition Leader then, goes off to see the Agong.

But in Zimbabwe Timur a.k.a. Malayisa, they have to be afraid of SB, BPR, and Police Road Blocks.

And the sitting PM wants to see the list.

Is this some JOKE or what? This is NOT the proper behaviour of a Civilised Mature Parliamentary Democracy.

In a manner of speaking, His Majesty's Government actually consists of the Leader of the Dewan called the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition.

Each has its role, function and responsibilities.

Whenever, the Leader of the Opposition stands up and says, I now Command the Majority of the MPs in the Dewan, then the normal process takes place.

Sad to say, Zimbabwe Timur we are and evrybody thinks this Anwar Ibrahim is some JOKER who goes around selling "snake oil" or something.

The event of 200pm Press Conference on the 16th Sept. is a very serious matter but unfornately, we are playing like some kids.

By and large, Malaysians have yet to appreciate the real meaning, traditions, practices and conventiosn of Parliamentary Democracy.

Otherwise, don't bother to adopt what is some 600 years of going-ons after Magna Carta.

[if you want The Charter of al Madinah by al means adopt it, but for the lack of true Muslim Leaders].

Hmmmm looks like DSAI is bluffing, he doesnt have the numbers. If he did he would have seen Agung straight away and call for PM dismissal. You think AAB is so stupid to meet DSAI and nicely hand over Putrjaya to him. LOL - actually ROFLMAO.

I dont buy this nicely nicley softly softly approach - smoke screen.

Don't waste Rakyat time anymore. Put up now and meet AAB's challenge or shut up and quietly fade away until next election. The country and economy needs full attention and not destabilising distractions.

The ball is now back in DSAI court for immediate attention TODAY not tomorrow or day after. We have waited and waited since March GE hearing "We got the numbers, We got the numbers!!".

Counts for nought unless its published and they all quickly meet at a press conference with DSAI and announce it together.

Also they must all state - its done voluntarily without any inducements and that they are willing to let independent ACA probe once new government takes over. Only then will Rakyat seriously believe DSAI and Co.

Come on DAP and PAS you guys should know better than this. You have been credible opposition in past. Why you wasting everyone’s time and destroying your own reputaton as well. Ai yo Bhai Singh (Karpal) , why are you not acting asap to stop this smokescreen!!!

In this age of "INSTANTs", we all want to see instant results. If changing a govt is like changing clothes, then this place will be another banana replublic in no time. The ruling govt pulls out all the stops and use all the tricks in their book to stay in place. The opposition has to do the same thing to rock them off their perch. Yet, they have to maintain doing it with certain legitimacy, otherwise they look like they're no better than the incumbent. The rest of us, whether for or against them, we have to stay level-headed and hope that something good comes out of all this elbowing. Otherwise, some people may want to go choose some big travelling bags for a one-way trip...
