SUPERMUM HAS PASSED ON. AL-FATIHA

SHEIH (Kickdefalla) called to inform me that his mother passed away after 5.00pm this evening. Rocky's SMS followed shortly. Supermum has been ill since July 2007. Sheih is stranded and can only catch a ferry at 8.00am tomorrow morning before proceeding to Kuala Lumpur. The funeral rites are expected tomorrow morning. I'd like to attend the funeral, if I know where and when. Anyone can help? I wanted to call Sheih for this information, but thought otherwise. I'd like to leave him with his thoughts just for his Super Mum.

THIS BLOG WILL REMAIN SILENT FOR 24 HOURS AS A MARK OF RESPECT.

THREE MINUTES TO EARTH HOUR.

SADLY MALAYSIA IS NOT INVOLVED! BUT WE MALAYSIANS CAN JOIN IN THIS GLOBAL EFFORT.

BLOG buddette Anuradha nudged me with an email some 30minutes ago remind me of EARTH HOUR. Here is some background about Earth Hour:

On Saturday, March 29, 2008, Earth Hour invites people around the world to turn off their lights for one hour – from 8:00pm to 9:00pm in their local time zone. On this day, cities around the world, including Copenhagen, Chicago, Melbourne, Dubai, and Tel Aviv, will hold events to acknowledge their commitment to energy conservation.

Given Googles commitment to environmental awareness and energy efficiency, we strongly support the Earth Hour campaign, and have darkened our homepage today to help spread awareness of what we hope will be a highly successful global event.

As of 27 March, over 11,900 businesses and over 200,000 individuals had indicated their intention to participate at earthhour.org.

Earth Hour 2008 will include the following asia-pacific"partner cities". Cities in Europe and the United States and Canada are committed.

ASIA-PACIFIC PARTICIPANTS:
THE MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT DID NOT COMMIT TO THIS GLOBAL EFFORT. BUT WE MALAYSIANS CAN DO OUR LITTLE BIT TONIGHT. SWITCH OFF FOR ONE HOUR FOR MOTHER EARTH.

LETS PUT OUR HANDS TOGETHER. SYABAS WILAYAH MPs.

The 10 MPs from the Federal Territory have displayed urgency in their first joint press-release. I read this in MP for Wangsa Maju. Yang Berkhidmat Wee Choo Keong's blog:

The 10 opposition Members of Parliament (namely Bandar Tun Razak, Batu, Cheras, Wangsa Maju, Kepong, Titiwangsa, Lembah Pantai, Bukit Bintang, Segambut and Seputeh) met last night (
25-03-08) at Federal Hotel. The following resolutions were unanimously resolved:

1. 1.We the10 opposition Members of Parliament in Kuala Lumpur, note that two months prior to the 12th General Elections (GE) DBKL was very relax in taking actions against the hawkers, petty traders, DBKL tenants and others.

2 2. We also note that immediately after the completion of the 12th GE, resulting in the clear rejection of BN by the KL residents, DBKL swung into actions to victimize and/or punish the hawkers, petty traders and threaten to victimize and/or punish the DBKL tenants in the opposition held constituencies, for the miserable performance of BN in the GE.

3. We strongly condemn DBKL for involving itself in politics and taking such concerted actions to victimize and/or punish the hawkers, petty traders and DBKL tenants for exercising their democratic rights in the 12th GE to elect the 10 opposition MPs from PKR, DAP and PAS in Kuala Lumpur.

4. We call upon the Datuk Bandar Kuala Lumpur to immediately stop the political actions in victimizing and/or punishing the hawkers, petty traders and DBKL tenants for exercising their democratic to elect the MPs of their choice.

I fervently hope that this single mindedness of purpose will prevail throughout your deliberations for the betterment of the rakyat in Wilaya Perseketuan, who defiantly voted you people in. My humble suggestion that unless the 10 of you declare a new manifesto for the people of the Federal Territory, your personal and party's priorities will/may invariably seep in to erode your now united and stated purpose for the people you now serve. The BN, though dislocated but not fractured, will pounce at any misstep and together with their media will make capital of such missteps. It might be a good idea to take some time to ponder on this direction that I picked up from the Stand Up Philosopher, Tony G's blog:

'If you share a good idea long enough, it will eventually fall on good people.

Leadership is the challenge to be something more than average.

Leaders, whether in the family, in business, in government, or in education, must not allow themselves to mistake intentions for accomplishments.

Leaders must learn to discipline their disappointments. It is not what happens to us, it is what we choose to do about what happens that makes the difference in how our lives turn out.

Learn to help people with more than just their jobs; help them with their lives.

In leadership we teach: Don't send your ducks to eagle school because it won't help'.

BREAKING NEWS:
WILL PM BE PRESSURED TO RESIGN AT SUPREME COUNCIL MEETING TAKING PLACE IN UMNO HQ NOW?

THEY ADMITTED THEY ARE PRO BARISAN NASIONAL.

This came into my inbox. I called the author Stanley and got his permission to put this up in this blog.It complements People's Parliament's HARTAL MSM efforts.

Tak Nak star: Peace to all Malaysians,

In our recent meeting with the Regional editor and staff of STAR PUBLICATION Penang, I discovered that, it`s really a waste of our money and time supporting this kind of publication and making them rich day by day. They Do not have a stand and are playing games in the tune of the people. They are not committed to journalism and does not have the quality of being a press company. They admitted that they are PRO GOVERNMENT.

They have also denied in not giving a fair and equal coverage to all parties in the General Election. The Regional editor Anna cheah said that, We have given our best and had given a fair and equal coverage to all contesting parties. It was clear that she was defending her company. They are not even willing to admit their mistake. How can we expect an apology from this guys.

They continued saying that, any sensitive report or political report which is unsafe to be publish, will be first send to kl to the big bosses for editing and for advice on whether or not to publish the report.. Now, who are the big bosses !!!!!!! MCA Guys..... And we have seen by our own eyes, the results of the report about the opposition during the GE 08.. Full of BULLSHIT and negative views of the opposition. And yet, they still have the pride to say, We are not wrong. It is a big shame and humiliation for the journalism career !

They even said that, their license are given on a yearly basis. And that there are many rules to be followed. So, does that mean that they will be in favor for the government even if right or wrong. And if they publish a true negative report on BN and a true positive report on the opposition will their license be in trouble. Let me tell you guys, this company is not afraid of their license being revoked, they can get it back like in the past. I think it is the boss whom belongs to MCA whom chooses to be a tool of barisan nasional and reject press freedom, trying to fool the readers in to what he wants the people to read. He is trying to give a good impression to BN that he`s doing his part for the government and standing up for them, hoping to get a minister post in the cabinet in years time i think !

Do we want to be the reason of this companies success. Do we want this kind of people to succeed in their plans.

We have change our government, Let us change our paper too!!!!! Stop making them rich.

create SMS and sent out to all your contacts to boycott the star !!!

No point complaining. Let us put it in to action!

It worked during our General Elections !!!

And it even worked on all the Nasi Kandar shops in Penang !! they are badly hit.

Now we wanna use it on THE STAR... SMS/ EMAIL/ FLYERS..

Be creative and design your own words!!! and send it out to everyone !!!!!

We also demand for advertisers to stop advertising in The Star as that is their main profit.

We also demand the international press association to withdraw all awards given to The Star.

We will keep track on companies advertising in The Star and include them in our boycott list if they continue to advertise in The Star.

Forwards this mail to all your contact. Let us stand united as BANGSA MALAYSIA rejecting companies who denies us our rights to hear and read the truth.

STAR IS A CANCER. STOP IT BEFORE IT`S TOO LATE.

Let`s show them the People`s Power.. MAKKAL SAKTHI ! We can do it.

Thousands have stop buying, Why not you ?

SICKNESS OR WEAKNESS?

WHEN WILL WE EVER LEARN OR WE JUST DON'T WANT TO LEARN!

The winds of change swept through this country and it brought down 4 BN states and the
Federal Territory. Whilst new governments, after some hiccups, are sprouting foliage, dark sirocco winds loom. Are the losers showing poor breeding, unable to take a beating like a man? After some have cheated and won, can they not pretend to be magnanimous in "victory"? In one breath the BN swore change would be the order of the new governance, in the next breath they drew their swords in defiance of the King. Is madness for power so overpowering that allegiance is so paper-thin? Is protecting bag-carriers so important that defiance of the ruling Monarch is peppered with threats?

Or is it because the days of plundering and looting are kind of over, or are otherwise numbered, that, the FAT CATS are deliriously pawing to maintain their "rights" of passage? Wasn't it the epicureans that brought down the Roman Empire? And did money play their part in the recruitment of protesters in Penang? And is shredding of official documents the flavour of the month?

But thank God, that 12 aduns decided to support Datuk Ahmad Said. Did good sense prevail or the fear of being banished that brought about this change of allegiance. Is allegiance a pendulum?
WHEN WILL WE EVER LEARN? WHEN WILL WE EVER LEARN?

How many roads must a man walk down

before you call him a man?

Yes, and how many seas must the white dove sail

before she sleeps in the sand?

Yes, and how many times must the cannon balls fly

before they're forever banned?

Chorus: The answer my friend is blowing in the wind;

The answer is blowing in the wind.

How many times must a man look up

before he can see the sky?

Yes, and how many ears must one man have

before he can hear people cry?

Yes, and how many deaths will it take till he he knows

that too many people have died?

The answer my friend is blowing in the wind;

The answer is blowing in the wind.

How many years can a mountain exist

before it is washed to the sea?

Yes, and how many years can some people exist

before they're allowed to be free?

Yes, and how many times can a man turn his head

pretending that he just doesn't see?

The answer my friend is blowing in the wind;

The answer is blowing in the wind.

MAKE A DATE WITH BUM2008

AS MORE DETAILS COME IN, THEY WILL BE POSTED HERE.

CELEBRATING DIVERSITY: JUST ENJOY AND DON'T WRITE A THESIS ON IT.

THANKS MRS. SUDESH! MISS YOU BOTH.
IF THE STIFF-UPPER LIP ENGLISH CAN WHY CANT WE?

DANG! ARE WE MALAYSIANS FIRST OR RACE FIRST?

There we go again. The Selangor State Ex-Co has not even sat to chart our future and we have a bunch of people protesting that the racial composition is not right. Come on people, when are we going to rub off this scepter of race first before nationality. It is difficult after 50 years? Can we at least take little baby step towards being Bangsa Malaysia and not Malaysian Malays, Malaysian Chinese and Malaysian Indians, Malaysian Kadazan, Ibans, Dayaks etc....

I challenge UMNO, the largest political party to show us the way! Is UMNO up to it? Could this be the redeeming factor that could win back credibility that UMNO so badly needs.

In this context, I always like to relate the story my friend the former Director of the Science Centre, Jayanath Appudurai related about one of his trips to London: Three of us were having coffee on the sidewalk and an old Englishman asked to join us. He was a planter in the sixties and he asked: You three must be Malaysians! Nowhere but in Malaysia can you find people of different races enjoy each other's company over drinks. That says a lot about us, huh? Those of us who traveled and when asked we proudly say : WE ARE MALAYSIANS! Do we proudly exclaim this when a foreign tourist ask us this question back home here in Malaysia? Think about it? Let's do something about this. Baby steps OK?

Note: People's Parliament will be convening the follow-up Anak Bangsa Malaysia get-together in three weeks time at BLOGHOUSE. Keep connected for this event.

HE SAID IT YESTERDAY: HE DID JUST THAT TODAY.

In an interfiew with the Sunday Times, Zaid Ibrahim, who is chairman of the biggest legal firm in Malaysia and philanthropist whose Kelantan Foundation for the disabled serves 2,400 people suffering from Dpwn Syndrome, cerebral palsy and other disabilities, said that he would step down as Chairman of Zaid Ibrahim & Co. He did just that this morning.

Here is a man rejected by his party for having a mind of his own and now appointed into the Cabinet to do some necessary housekeeping, judiciary wise. "I am here not to keep my job. I am here to do a job." This is leadership by example. We just hope that when the PM asks for the declaration of assets, the honest will do the honest thing. Word has it that the lines to swiss banks are a-buzzing and many things are changing hands.....proxy wise......and even migration here.

ASIDE: I thanked Hantu for this piece and this was the reply: we live in interesting times darling, and u bloggers helped make it that way.

MAINSTREAM MEDIA DIAGNOSED WITH THE BIG C: STAGE 4 (4)

COMMENT FROM SLEDGEHAMMER BLOG

  1. Abdul Rahman Says:

The elections prove a very critical point. Return to basics.

Quoting Henry Tan “Content is not necessarily king, distribution is king and engagement is the ultimate”. BN manage to maintained their simple majority simply because of mass reach of conventional media especially in rural areas. The Opposition could have probably won the elections had they not been denied the access to mass media. To counter that effect, the opposition ENGAGED the public via any means necessary effectively from online blogs to door to door visits and “ceramahs” fully utilizing powerful speakers like Anwar Ibrahim. Hence, this really proves how media planning has to evolve to communications channel planning - leveraging on touch points. Communications channel planning must be brought to the fore and not some after thought.

Understand your consumers! BN had misread the “rakyat” and therefore paid dearly. A clear lesson is getting the right information. Research is no longer calling up acquaintances and asking them what they think. Proper research via the correct channels is required to provide an accurate picture of any political and market situation. All parties (either client, media, creative, PR, research, etc) involved then have to really sit together to piece out REAL consumer insights. The opposition got this right by opening up to the grouses of the “rakyat”. It was BN’s development campaign vs the opposition’s change campaign. Cheesy and corny patriotic TVCs and testimonials versus a really witty sarcastic humorous online clip. A clear David vs Goliath example. By understanding your consumers then the right communication via the right channels within the right context could be achieve.

This would also mean that the mass media would have to seriously evolve too and see the people they are reaching as real consumers with real issues and needs. If not, consumers will move towards other media distribution points ie online. Hence, the shift of control over information distribution. These developments would be indeed interesting to observe especially how mainstream media will evolve in the content distribution business.

With all that said, it would mean advertisers must start seeing agencies as business partners and not just a another service provider. Agencies would have to make a really big leap of faith to explore the unknown and provide results oriented solutions by investing into research, training and optimizing. The industry would have to evolve by putting the consumer to the fore. Sometimes its not what is being said but more of what isn’t said.

As DAP puts is, “Change it” and not be be as the Malay saying goes “Katak di bawah tempurung” (Frog under the coconut shell). The elections have very important lessons which the BN government will not take for granted come the next election but to the industry as a whole.

ONE NATION:ONE RACE:BANGSA MALAYSIA

I received this from Concerned Malaysian:

Anonymous Concerned Malaysian said...

Dear Uncle Zorro,

Please start a new campaign:

That henceforth from today onwards, all bloggers will push the MSM to refer to all Malaysian as Malaysians and not Malays, Chinese, Indians...lets start with Malaysiakini....show them how it can be done. Deduct points for common sense when they use race to classify, expose them for their pitiful shallow thinking. Let it be shameful to classify by race. That way soon we can truly have a multi racial Malaysia Malaysians can be proud of. I hope you can get this going. Thank you for all your previous efforts!

March 22, 2008 5:58 PM

Concerned Malaysian has my undivided support. Let's do it people. "Bangsa Malaysia" initiative in Penang is very active. I suggest you take this up in your communications with each other. The KL chapter seems indolent (no insults meant...just probing). People's Parliament kicked-start this Anak Bangsa Malaysia initiative .....it is time we bring this to the three states under Barisan Rakyat aegis., ie Kelantan, Perak, Kedah. and not forgetting Sabah and Sarawak. Haris, lets gather the forces. Raja Petra has a timely piece here.

A COMMENT BY PETE TEO IN SLEDGEHAMMER'S BLOG:

  1. Pete Teo Says:

Several mainstream papers asked me to write a regular popular arts column last year. For all sorts of reasons, I was wasn’t able to accept and still have not done so to date. Nonetheless, in the course of our discussions, many conversations about the state of Malaysia’s media arose. In one of them, I argued that the country’s mainstream papers will be marginalised within a decade…

    “Why?”, they asked.

“Because you are out of touch with the emerging Malaysian public and your credibility is shot”.

For example, I know few Malaysians of college age who take the mainstream press seriously. Other than obvious political bias, senior members of press have also completely lost touch with changes in popular culture. Thus, while the grass roots have been characterized by the empowerment of legitimate homegrown artistic voices in the last half decade, the mainstream media remained ignorant of this groundswell and continue to pander to foreign acts on their last pay day. Many of our musicians, for example, have made in-roads into regional markets - a fact that few have reported. Likewise, our indie filmmakers have swept awards in top film festivals throughout the world while senior editors veto coverage merely with an ill-judged dismissal: ‘the public is not interested’.

Herein lies the problem. However you look at it, these are community papers, read by members of the community. If they only serve the interest of the elite [in whatever field] and lose sight of their fundamental role as forums to nurture and accommodate the multifarious voices of the community, then they lose legitimacy over time. Fact is, the popular media in this country has in the last decade [or more] over-covered the centre and neglected the fringe - due in part to an over-emphasis on its commercial priorities and at the expense of its social function as a community forum. It is thus when the cultural fringe eases into the center over time, as it has done and will increasingly do, these media look out-of-touch and irrelevant. In an age when our kids are logging onto Myspace to check out the latest buzz on some homegrown band after they’re done on Pitchfork, arts editors who cannot keep up do not have credibility - let alone those whose idea of a good time is a pub cover version of ‘Hotel California’, done however note-perfectly.

Thus, in all areas of their coverage [not just politics], our media players need serious re-thinking. This includes advertisers. The top, as they say, reflects the bottom.

MAINSTREAM MEDIA DIAGNOSED WITH THE BIG C: STAGE 4 (2)

A COMMENT IN SLEDGEHAMMER'S BLOG;

  1. Keith Theseira Says:

From a pure consumers point of view, its simple really. Stay relevant or die.

Poor, biased and inaccurate content make most of our local dailies irrelevant. We need the news to make important life and business decisions. We need it to keep us up-to-date with local and world affairs so that we can remain an informed and well educated society.

If the dailies can not provide us with this then we should find alternatives.

Being exposed to advertising has always been seen as a the price we pay for the news or entertainment. Advertising also serves to keep consumers informed about goods and services available to them. In many ways, the advertisement itself is content for dailies. We may see ourselves picking up the papers to check out the banking ads as we are making a decision to take-on a home loan. However, there are many ways that advertisers can communicate with its consumers.

As readership for the dailies fall, surely the use of other mediums of communication will rise. Mediums such as Direct Mailers, various online mediums and sms alerts will fill in the gap.

Ad agencies won’t loose out. We just have to look for more effective and efficient media vehicles. Even agencies that generate its main income from media commissionables may soon find new models for profits.

From "Beneath the Red Hood" Blog:

By Warren Tan | March 18, 2008

Found this really great article on ADOI’s blog. A must-read for those who spend thousands and millions on ads: You’re wasting your money on media that is becoming more and more irrelevant day by day.

I’ve been saying this to our clients for the longest time: Spend your money where your audience is. And if the recent elections are anything to go by, hardly anybody believes what they see or hear in our traditional media anymore.

Spending 95% of your budget on TV and newspaper ads that give you no measurable results?

MAN'S RESOURCEFULNESS: A BLESSED GIFT

HANTU flew past and droppped this piece into the letter box with a note: Happy Easter, see u at the star Forum on Monday.

I have never given up on the resourcefulness of man. Always an optimist, I always give the benefit of the doubt to innovative shifts. Of course, this idea came too late for George Bush but I was wondering if Pak Lah could outsource the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development because this guy just doesn't have it. HE SWORE HE DOES NOT UNDERSTAND ENGLISH. This choice illustrates the paucity of choice in the BN, or like someone said, his name got drawn in Pak Lah's lucky draw.but we have to accept MMT....the luck of the draw must be honored. It was also said that after Pak Lah made the best choice of including Zaid Ibrahim he found choosing the others a chore....thus all names were put into the box and the viola, the new cabinet. The 4th floor boys witnessed the draw and when MMT's name was drawn, an uproar ensued but soon quelled by this opener: Hey, guys....now that Zak is no more, we need someone with similar nefarious trait....build more mansions.....rural and regional development mah!

Here is Hantu's offerings. Can this be applied here for non-performers after three months?

Happy days are here again!!!

Congress Votes to Outsource Presidency

Washington, DC -- Congress today announced that the office of President of the United States of America will be outsourced to India as of March
1, 2008
. The move is being made in order to save the President's $500,000 yearly salary, and also a record $521 billion in deficit expenditures and related overhead that his office has incurred during the last 7 years. It is anticipated that $231 billion can be saved to the end of the President's term. "We believe this is a wise financial move. The cost savings are huge," stated Congressman Thomas Reynolds (R-WA). "We cannot remain competitive on the world stage with the current level of cash outlay," Reynolds noted.

Mr. Bush was informed by e-mail this morning of his termination. Preparations for the job move have been underway for some time.

Gurvinder Bob Singh of Indus Teleservices, Mumbai, India will assume the office of President as of March 1, 2008. Mr. Singh was born in the United States while his Indian parents were vacationing at Niagara Falls, NY, thus making him eligible for the position. He will receive a salary of $320 (USD) a month, but no health coverage or other benefits.

It is believed that Mr. Singh will be able to handle his job responsibilities without a support staff. Due to the time difference between the US and India, he will be working primarily at night. "Working nights will allow me to keep my day job at the Dell Computer call center," stated Mr. Singh in an exclusive interview. "I am excited about this position. I always hoped I would be President of Dell..and now of America"

A Congressional spokesperson noted that while Mr. Singh may not be fully aware of all the issues involved in the office of President, this should not be a problem as President Bush had never been familiar with the issues either.

Mr. Singh will rely upon a script tree that will enable him to respond effectively to most topics of concern. Using these canned responses, he can address common concerns without having to understand the underlying issue at all. "We know these scripting tools work," stated the spokesperson. "President Bush has used them successfully for years, with the result that some people actually thought he knew what he was talking about."

Bush will receive health coverage, expenses, and salary until his final day of employment. Following a two-week waiting period, he will be eligible for $140 a week unemployment for 26 weeks. Unfortunately he will not be eligible for Medicaid, as his unemployment benefits will exceed the allowed limit.

Mr. Bush has been provided with the outplacement services of Manpower, Inc. to help him write a resume and prepare for his upcoming job transition. According to Manpower, Mr. Bush may have difficulties in securing a new position due to a lack of any successful work experience during his lifetime. A greeter position at Wal-Mart was suggested due to Bush's extensive experience at shaking hands, as well as his special smile.

WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK....CAN OR NOT IN MALAYSIA....BEAR IN MIND OUR CLARION CALL.....THAT BOLEH BIT.

Is it official that this piece of property is about ready for the auctioneers hammer. You guys better do something before Christie interprets this as a piece of art and come a-calling. Just a service to my friends, this early alarm.
