the board.

====
Once Ah Beng was walking he had a glove on one hand and not on other.
So the man asked him why he did so. He replied that the weather forecast
announced that on one hand it would be cold and on the other hand it would
be hot.

====
Ah Beng in National Press Club and his cellular phone rings. He picks it up and
Says 'Hello, how did you know I was here?'

====
Ah Beng : Why are all these people running?
Man - This is a race, the winner will get the cup
Ah Beng - If only the winner will get the cup, why others running?

====
Teacher: 'I killed a person' convert this sentence into future tense
Ah Beng : The future tense is 'u will go to jail'

====
Ah Beng told his maid: 'Go and water the plants!'
Servant: 'It's already raining.'
Ah Beng : 'So what? Take umbrella and go.'

====
A man asked Ah Beng why Ahmad Badawi goes walking in the Evening and not
in the morning Ah Beng replied Ahmad Badawi is PM not AM

(Notice...something....his English has improved...less of the Chinglish 'mah')...that's because he mixes with good company.....me and TV Smith....and less with Patrick the Teoh. Gotcha Niamah! When do we three knock glasses and splash around the malts?.

Thanks Mike, my younger biological brother for the much improved , but still irrepressible Ah Beng.

RELEVANTLY IRRELEVANT!

WHO calls the shots in Kuala Lumpur? The mayor of Kuala Lumpur or the Federal Territories Minister?

The Federal Capital Act 1960 states that the Datuk Bandar has to report to the FT Minister who is in charge of formulating and tabling the policies in the cabinet. City Hall will then implement the policies.

If memory holds good this Federal Territories Minister post was abandoned and then revived in 2004, for reasons still unknown.

Who has the final say in matters relating to policies concerning Kuala Lumpur?

I figure it is these nine people (chart below).

Because if it is one person (either the Minister or the Datuk Bandar, then we would not have the mess in this Federal Capital City.

As such, this Ministerial post is relevantly irrelevant.

He is the only BN man in the Federal Capital pitted against 10 Pekatan Rakyat MPs.....and he is made a Minister. What lah, Pak Lah? It like condemning him to the slaughter house...and a Malaysiakini report has it that some UMNO divisions are already asking for his head and blaming him for the downfall of the BN in the Federal Capital. That is relevant of course. And when he goes, the deputy Minister of FT (now under a cloud of legal tangles) and the other 7 heads in the Ministry also must go. They have to unless the Datuk Bandar can absorb them under his wings and make the City Council more messy. If they can clean the mess in the FT, I am the first Chinese Prime Minister of Malaysia!

Another totally relevantly irrelevant post is that of this bloke above. He did such a loud job of being the de fuckto'......ooppps....facto Law Minister that the job was taken away from him and his current job is to see that there are no leaks in Parliament, invitations are sent out to whoever has to be invited, no more slaughter of bovines in Parliament premises, the floors are booby-trapped against possible cross-over of the hallowed floor, and that questions are fairly distributed, and he reports what goes on in Parliament to Cabinet, assuming that Cabinet Members have more pressing duties rather than attend Parliament. This last one is a real joke....like being a glorified messenger boy......THUS RELEVANTLY IRRELEVANT. But if the Chief still gives him a job, being in charge of KLIA taxis would be more appropriate, given his legal background and his past expertise in things taxis.

SYNONYMOUS WITH BULLY: COWARD!

On March 27,2008 I blogged about an effort by a group in Penang to boycott the Star. (here)scroll down for tak nak star.
Today I received some items of what transpired between Stanley and a KL-based editor Charles.
I just wonder why they picked on Stanley and unloaded him with some heavy stuff which they never did to People's Parliament's much-muscled effort (here).

This is how it happened to Stanley:

INTERESTING COMMENTS MADE BY a STAR employee in an interview with me

by K.Sudhagaran Stanley,

Good day to all,

The Star has taken note of the 'Anti-Star Campaign" and are pretty worried on what this campaign could possibly achieve. So they sent someone to speak to me to convince me that Star is a great newspaper.

The editor of crime desk Mr. Lourdes J. Charles, representing the Star, came down from K.L recently to meet. In the interview, he made certain interesting comments which I am quoting below for your consideration:

· "Your articles asking for a boycott of Star have not gone down well with the Police and government and the police has investigated this matter"

· "Star gives a 30% quota to the Opposition. And that is more than any paper in the country!"

· "The survey, on the coverage of the GE 08 by the media done recently by the media watch group which showed that the Star is the most pro government, was commissioned by the SUN.

· "There is a newspaper war going on."

· "Blogs and alternative media publish lots of lies."

· "DAP led government in Penang will collapse if they choose to boycott the Star."

· "The Star will favor the government of the day."

· "If you don't like the Star, don't buy the Star!"

· "There is nothing for the Star to apologise for."

· "The Star is an MCA owned paper."

He tried convincing me to stop the boycott campaign by instilling fear in me that the police and government are not happy with my articles on boycotting the Star. He even stated that the police had done an investigation on me on this issue. Is it true then, that the Barisan Nasional is a share holder of the Star? If no, why are the Police and the Government unhappy with my campaign?

When questioned on why insufficient space was given to the opposition to air their views during the GE 08, Charles claimed that the articles were finalized late and that there was not enough time to publish it the next day. Does he mean that in the two weeks of the GE 08 campaign, they face the same problems everyday? If so, they are not fit to be a press company. He even stated that lots of the articles about the opposition were published in the KL editions. Well KL people, this is your chance to comment on the truth of that statement.

When questioned on why Anwar Ibrahim was not given a chance to reply in their papers on the statement made by Chandra Mussafar just before the GE 08, Charles replied me in a way trying to judge the mind of it's readers by telling me that Chandra is a man of justice and a close friend of Anwar. And that Anwar could not even answer the questions posted by BBC in Hard Talk. He claimed that Anwar was mumbling. He even stated that when Anwar was Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, he did not do anything good for the community and took away the rights of the Indians and Chinese. Well. That's not for The Star to decide. Give us both point of views and the readers will decide.

The Star even claimed that the recent survey on the press done by the media watch group on the General Election which stated the Star was the most pro-government paper, was commissioned by the SUN and that a paper war is going on. I want an explanation from The SUN on this matter. He said that 30% quota was given to the opposition by The Star. He even stated that other blogs and alternative media publish lots of lies and false news.

Charles even claimed that the new Penang government led by DAP will collapse if it chooses to boycott the Star, because the Star will not give them any space to voice their views. And that was why Guan Eng replied "I don't boycott newspapers", when asked by the star to comment on people boycotting The Star. Well let me tell The Star, we have not depended on your paper to get the message of the opposition. It will make no difference if your company were to close down in a few months time. It is because the rakyat does not depend on a paper which is full of lies and lop-sided views.

The Star has even stated that we don't have the right to demand an apology from them and that they don't subscribe to the demands of the public. They said "If you don't like The Star, don't buy The Star. This is their view. Are we still going to support a company which is so arrogant? We have allowed them to monopoly the market for so many years, if we still allow them to do so, there might be a time that we might not have our choice.

The TAK NAK STAR campaign will go on. Stop buying and Advertising in the Star. They have rejected to an open apology for their unfair reports during the GE 08. Even lately when HINDRAF organized an Abolish ISA forum in Penang, The report was not publish. Many news and reports are not being published by them. Do we need this kind of press?

They even stated that they will favor the government of the day, which means they have not stood by their commitment towards journalism. At one point Charles even admitted that the vendors are being disturbed by the campaign and that, they are worried 3000 people might loose their jobs in The Star.

Well, this is good sign for us. Let us continue in this struggle to defeat injustice, stop the lies and practice democracy.

The Star is also one of the main reasons for the downfall of BN in the 5 states, claims Charles. He stated that the Star did a lot of underground work to make the opposition win and the results is Kedah, Penang and Selangor fell into opposition hands. Are they making sense in claiming that?

K.Sudhagaran Stanley,

Coordinator,

NOW THAT THIS IS PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE, WILL CHARLES BE CALLED BEFORE THE BOARD?.....AND THIS HAPPENED MONTHS AGO......

I GIVE UP! LET THE "PROFESSIONALS" RUN IT!

On September 15, 2007 I posted this:

PERSATUAN KENASEPAK MALAYSIA

"It is hard to forget this organisation. We supported it. We loved it. We were loyal to it. But that was some 20 odd years ago. Today it (the tiger)has lost all its stripes. Today it is limping painfully. It has lost all its teeth. Today it is in a pathetic state. Many of its officers have abandoned this injured animal! Do we pity this organisation? "

This morning I chanced on ERIC SAMUEL S58 of Sunday Star. I already like this guy, if he continues to comment along these lines. He brings back to mind Sports Commentators of yore like Fauzi Omar, Lazarus Rokk, Johnson Fernendez, R Nadeswaran, and even Png Hong Kwan. These are the guys who tell you, eye-ball-to-eyeball...."You don't like it, stuff it." GO READ ERIC'S.

One interesting bit caught my attention, me having been involved in school/youth football in the 19 years of my teaching career. "The Education Ministry are starting theIr own nationwide football league. Maybe the Youth and Sports Ministry and FAM could provide funding for it and keep this league going, with some professional training as well." Eric, this sounds new to many, but we are still flogging the same horse such that the horse believes it has morphed intol an ass. The Education Ministry, the FAM Youth Committee (wonder if it still exists) , the MSSM, Majlis Sekolah Sekolah Malaysia (if it exists, its only by name.) are at it again. Some few years ago I was invited to give my dua sen at an MSSM forum organised by the FAM. It had the trappings of an international event nearly as close as a FIFA razzmatazz, the phalanx of secretaries to take down all the wisdom enunciated by participants, well-packaged goodie bags etc, etc. I waited with bated breath.....a futile wait. BTW, we have something called the Sports Cabinet, haven't we, But it won't work Eric, believe me. My NST friend Bob told me that he could not even get the results of some schoolboy hockey tournament played recently! The secretariate was housed in a hotel, believe you me. Gee we have really progressed from the days when the likes of Mokhtar Dahari, Santokh, Chin Nam, Choon Wah, and the late Spiderman Aru had to share double-decker bunks in the old FAM Hilton along Jalan Birch.

I quote what my friend RPK who said yesterday, "
while you need brains to become a lawyer, you really do not need to be a lawyer to have brains," CAN THE SAME BE SAID OF THOSE WHO RUN THE FAM?

And Eric ended well, (tongue in cheek?): "As for the "professional" Super League that now exists, let it burn itself out and disappear into oblivion, with the bookies and politicians et al."

BUT I SAY: LET THE BOOKIES RUN FOOTBALL IN THE COUNTRY....THERE IS TAX REVENUE HERE!

GOT TO GO WITH SUDESH TO CHECK OUT THE MUTTON AT CHEERS AND LATER ON TO SHAMROCKS TO CHECK OUT THE MEAT AND MALTS.

Malaysiakini Will Never Walk Alone!

ZORRO, TORNADO,HANTU WILL WALK WITH MALAYSIAKINI, NOW AND ALWAYS.

This was a posting I did slightly more than a year ago, when Sarawak Chief Minister sued Malaysiakini. This afternoon I received a comment and I felt that it was apapropriate that I produce this in its entirety as a blog-posting.

It should be crystal clear that the allegations lodged
against CM Taib Mahmud by Malaysiakini and Party Keadilan Rakyat Sarawak
are not based on rumor or hearsay, but on information
reported in a consistent manner by several leading Japanese newspapers. As
organizations working in the Malaysian public interest, Malaysiakini and Party Keadilan have merely been exercising their freedom of expression and fulfilling their duty to raise concerns to the public and competent authorities regarding highly disturbing information meriting further investigation. In fact, it would have been dereliction of
their public duty not to have done so.

If whistleblowers immediately face threats of litigation for
defamation, how can citizens play an active role in eliminating
corruption? Should not CM Taib Mahmud present a clear explanation rather than
resort to such intimidation? And if he disagrees with the allegations
in the reports, should he not question their sources in Japan and
the Japanese tax authorities, rather than Malaysian citizens who are
merely bringing them to the public attention?

Here the full comment:

The whole world knows about our little NAPOLEON in Sarawak but not us MALAYSIANS.
He staying power is because of the seats he delivers without fail to BN in every elections ( BN thus remaining in power)
I rate him as on one of the most smartest politician and richest person in the country.
Sadly the genes did not get passed on
Asian Genre got diluted along the way

Corruption allegations against Sarawak CM Taib Mahmud and
freedom of speech in Malaysia

Japanese NGO joint letter to PM Badawi & ACA

April 27th 2007

Dato' Seri Abdullah bin Haji Ahmad Badawi Prime Minister of
Malaysia

CC: Director, Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA)

Subject: Corruption allegations against Sarawak CM Taib
Mahmud and
freedom of speech in Malaysia

Your Excellency,

We, the undersigned Japanese non-governmental organizations and
citizen's groups, wish to express our profound concern
regarding threats by the Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Pehin Taib Mahmud to
lodge a defamation suit against the Malaysiakini news service and
leaders of Party Keadilan Rakyat Sarawak for raising allegations of his
involvement in a RM 32 million kickback scheme reported by the Japan
Times and other Japanese newspapers.

We understand that the corruption allegations raised against
CM Taib Mahmud originated from a report in the Japan Times on Mar
29,, 2007 that nine Japanese shipping companies which transport lumber from
Sarawak failed to report some 1.1 billion yen (approximately RM 32
million) in income paid as remuneration to Regent Star, a Hong
Kong-based agent with connections to CM Taib Mahmud and his family, during a
period of seven years through last March. According to the report, the Tokyo
Regional Taxation Bureau determined that these payments were rebates,
not legitimate expenses, and is likely to impose well over 400
million in back taxes and penalties against the shipping companies.

The Yomiuri Shimbun (in Japanese) also reported the above
facts in an article on March 28th. Furthermore, the Asahi Shimbun
English edition reported on March 28th that the Tokyo Regional Taxation
Bureau had ordered Kansai Line Co. to pay 50 million yen in back taxes and
penalties for falsely including so-called intermediation
fees totaling 130 million yen paid to Regent Star over a seven year period
until December 2005, in its cost of loading logs in ports in
Sarawak, in an effort to hide the payments.

The Asahi Shimbun Japanese edition further reported on March
27th that shipping companies affiliated with the Nanyozai Freight
Agreement (NFA) cartel are suspected to have paid more than US $25 million
(approx. 2.5 billion yen) in intermediation fees to Regent Star in the
ten years up to 2005. An anonymous industry source is quoted as admitting
that "there was an understanding that these were payments to the Chief
Minister's family" and in essence, kickbacks.

According to the article, the NFA admitted that it had in
1981 entered into an agreement with Dewaniaga Sarawak (DNS) on log
exports to Japan, and had been instructed by DNS to pay intermediation fees to
Regent Star in Hong Kong. The payments, which are said to have continued
for 26 years since 1981, are said to have started at a rate of
approximately US $1.50 per cubic meter of logs shipped, and to have increased
over the years to the current rate of US $3.28, while the log
shipments declined from a peak of 3.8 million m3 in 1990 to about 410,000 m3 in
2005. The report estimates that an average of one to four million
dollars per year, totaling US $25,250,000 was paid to Regent Star
between 1996 and 2005 alone. The article also mentions that an industry
source alleged that DNS director Dato' Onn Bin Mahmud, brother of CM Taib
Mahmud, sometimes participated in person in negotiations of the
intermediation fees between Regent Star and the NFA.

From the above, it should be crystal clear that the
allegations lodged against CM Taib Mahmud by Malaysiakini and Party Keadilan
Rakyat Sarawak are not based on rumor or hearsay, but on information
reported in a consistent manner by several leading Japanese newspapers. As
organizations working in the Malaysian public interest,
Malaysiakini and Party Keadilan have merely been exercising their freedom of
expression and fulfilling their duty to raise concerns to the public
and competent authorities regarding highly disturbing information meriting
further investigation.

In light of your pledge to make anti-corruption a top policy
priority with "zero tolerance for corruption," we urge you to live up
to your reputation by instructing the Malaysian Anti-Corruption
Agency (ACA) directly under your supervision to immediately commence a
formal investigation into the allegations raised in these media
reports, and to keep the public informed of developments thereof. Party
Keadilan Rakyat Sarawak has already lodged two reports on this matter as of
April 13th 2007, one with the Kuching Central Police Station and
another with the Anti-Corruption Agency in Kuching, following your public
statement advising that reports be lodged so that the ACA could take
action. Japanese civil society will do its most to urge the Japanese
tax authorities to cooperate with Malaysia in its investigation,
so that the truth can be revealed and justice served.

Furthermore, we ask you to ensure that Malaysian citizens do
not face undue pressure or malicious litigation in an attempt to
suppress their freedom of speech when raising issues in the public
interest. Certainly such transparency is crucial in upholding the honor and
untarnished reputation of Malaysia in the international community.

Sincerely,

CALL HIM A MAVERICK, BUT LET HIM DO HIS JOB.

ZORRO SALUTES THESE TWO. Everytime something out of the ordinary occurs, our prophets of doom swoop down with their gratuitous store of damning archaic, medieval remedies and proclamations.... and oten unsolicited at that.

Guan Eng is a maverick, and most mavericks succeed at what they set out to do. Mavericks do ordinary things in an extraordinary way. They try to shine what is bland, status quo and you get their detractors condemn them as "dreamers". Management gurus have always said that VISION WITHOUT ACTION IS JUST A DREAM. But Guan Eng is putting that vision into action and much against the normal way of doing things.....he CHOSE the best man for the job. You choose the best tutor for your kids, whether he he is black, blue, brown or purple. He is standing by his decisions, despite all the sour-grape snides. He is willing to be proven wrong and he is willing to take the rap. If you do not take the first step from A, chances are you will never reach B. My 88 year old mum told me that ages ago. He is doing ordinary things, DIFFERENTLY. What's wrong with that?

He inherited a JADED Pearl of the Orient. You expect him to sit on it and hatch another jaded one?
Can you empathise with him. It is not an ordinary task. The future of the state, his position, is on the scale. Whilst oldie keng Yaik mourns:
“I’m disappointed and angry because he was picked by me.", he has to learn to live with his mistake....and be able to realise later that Kah Choon may be right after all.
We all make mistakes.....especially the top dogs in the BN. Their choice of successors have so far been questionable. I say, IF YOU DONT LIKE CHANGE, STEP ASIDE FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO CHANGE......and dont do what you "cleverer than thou" frogs are doing now.....PASANG KAKI. It is demeaning and puerile. But that is exactly what you guys in the BN and some old nuts in DAP are doing.....throwing tantrums like spoilt brats, who do not know where they left their marbles last.

A reader (Kris) of this blog said that he sent a letter to the Star and as he feared, it would not be printed:

The ongoing storm over the appointment (and acceptance) of Datuk lee Kah Choon as Director of the Penang Development Corporation and Chairman of the executive committee of Invest-Penang shows in stark detail the mindset that exists among some within the Barisan Nasional. They do not act in the interests of the Rakyat.

The only response by the Barisan to Lees' appointment has been one of chastising and castigation. For breaking ranks with the party. For being disloyal. Not a word about how this is a case of non-partisan beliefs taking hold and that a good man has been appointed to this position and that he was appointed not by way of his affiliation but that he was deemed competent and capable.

Wake up gentlemen. The Barisan Nasional is not a boys club. It is a political amalgamation of parties and a part of the democratic process to ensure that the people who elected you come first. Not the party. You do not act to protect your interests. It is the people who should come first.

The Barisan needs to grow and mature. It's current reaction borders on infantile and further drives home the point it is not the brightest and the best that the Barisan appoints to key positions but rather members of it's party. This kind of thinking is not in the interest of the rakyat and to King and Country. I would venture to even call it treasonous, to act in your own self interest while abdicating your responsibility to the Nation. You are merely a political party. The country comes first.

I THINK IT IS ABOUT TIME WE ALL GREW UP AND REALISE THAT SURVIVING NOW IS NOT WHAT IT WAS 50 YEARS AGO. THE RULES OF ENGAGEMENT HAVE CHANGED AND THE SOONER OUR LEADERS REALISE THIS, THE BETTER FOR THE COUNTRY.

THE BEST THAT THOSE OF US WHO CANNOT CONTRIBUTE POSITIVELY IS TO
JUST SHUT THE @#CKAYE DI-ATAS.

GUAN ENG - KAH CHOON - JUST CHANGE IT.

THEIR COTTON-PICKIN' HANDS ARE ALWAYS IN THE WRONG PLACE.

HANTU was so incensed that names were being dropped around and some were even gambling over the odds as to who was the former Cabinet Minister who butt-pawed a lady. I know that in good time he would give me the identity of this degenerate. But of late I have noticed his short fuse. When further pressed to reveal the identity of culprit, made worse when those around were mimicking an owl's call of "who, who, who, who". That raised some hackles and he flew of with something like "double after me!" Me or mee, cannot be rebus, rebus....or is it me as in "I"....that would be a double J whammy........the same shifty-eyed who said that the darker you are, the lower your caste. How low can you go....or how low did you go....the journey your hand took, that is.

Here is another hand-job....and this one into the cookie jar. Word has it that a deputy minister (is it the FT, I wonder?)is one of two directors of a bumi company supplying road reflector paint & signages, being slapped with a RM8 million suit by a supplier. The company will invariably end up bankrupt. If the deputy minister is declared such......will there be a by-election. Is he Untouchable? Will this deputy minister be defrocked? and flogged? You see when you kick up a fight in the family, and sparks fly all over and some are incendiary.....and then it smokes out the tiny little inhabitants hibernating within. GREAT BALLS OF FIRE....so the song goes.

HE SEEMS TO HAVE LOST FAITH IN OUR JUDICIAL SYSTEM!

GUEST BLOGGER: SUSAN LOONE

Shaariibuu Setev, Altantuya’s father, arrived in Kuala Lumpur yesterday with a representative of Mongolian non-governmental organisations. The NGO representative, who wanted only to be known as Muugi, said she represented some 20 46 (see inside) child and women rights organisations in her country. Both of them would be attending the trial today (NST).

Before the duo arrived in KL, the Mongolian NGOs have issued an appeal to International organisations to step up their campaign to seek justice for Altantuya beyond Malaysian borders.

Their appeal, a copy of which I’ve received, reads like this:

Sh. Altantuya was brutally murdered using military C4 explosives by security officers of the Malaysian government on the 19th of October 2006. The security officers facing trial now were personal body guards of Malaysia Deputy Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak. Sh. Altantuya was avisitor to Malaysia. She was there to meet Najib’s political ally and a political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda. The trial has been in progress since June 2007.

Sh. Altantuya was the mother of two boys. The children have been suffering from grave social and health issues since the loss of their mother. The murder has caused serious psychological trauma and further crises for the two boys in their daily lives. The youngest son suffers from peripheral nerve paralysis and his health continues to deteriorate daily.

We ask that Malaysia and the world that is watching to please not forget that Sh. Alatantuya cared for the health and social wellbeing of her two sons as well as her extended family before her untimely death.

The wellbeing and livelihoods of these two young boys must not be forgotten and we strongly encourage that care and acknowledgement of Sh. Altantuya’s sons be taken into consideration during this trial.

We are asking those who are aware of this case to join our struggle and demand a FAIR TRIAL. We should stand together in this issue of human rights and demand that the Malaysian authorities and judiciary NOT FORGET the livelihoods of these two children that have been devastatingly affected by the murder of their mother.

As the brutal murder of the Mongolian citizen took place in Malaysia’s territory and was committed by government special security guard, orphaning two young children, we demand that the Malaysian Government provide compensation for the loss of the breadwinner to the victim’s children, including support for living and medical treatment costs for the youngest son for the duration of his lifetime, in compliance with the United Nations Declaration of Basic Principles of Justice for Victims of Crime and Abuse of Power adopted by the General Assembly Resolution No. 40/34 in 1985.

We hope and trust that YOU, as International Human Right organizations will support our struggle and demands for the right to life.

Recommended Action:

Please write to the authorities listed below. Remind them of the government’s obligation under CEDAW and Child Right Convention to ensure equal protection of the law to women and children. Urge them to find ways to ensure that the case of the murder of Sh. Altantuya in Malaysia is appropriately investigated and punished, in particular, by prosecuting all the defendants.

Please call on authorities to bring justice by prosecuting the responsible defendant and not to forget to ensure compensation for the loss of the breadwinner to the victim’s children.

CAN OR NOT, YOU ALL MIX AND MATCH, OKAY?

Friday last I had arranged to do happy hours with Citizen Nades. We had agreed on this whilst he was hospitalized some weeks back. It seemed ages since we knocked glass, and I was eagerly awaiting a date that had so many times been ON, then OFF, then ON, then OFF again for various reasons. So on Friday 1800hrs I called to confirm. "Cannot lah Bernard....Monday dateline, got a story but my juices ain't flowing" he said sounding disappointed, "Then top up and we'll get your juices come out in a deluge," I tempted. I failed. But I can understand. When Nades has got a story, nothing, repeat, NOTHING can get him away from his job. He belongs to that rare breed that, without batting an eye, he would take on the Almighty, if the Omnipotent challenged him on an issue. So I let him be and this is what he gave us yesterday:

I found this little gem in Google when I was doing some research into the bullet train project which I wrote about last week. Former colleague P. Gunasegaram had this to say when he argued why we don’t need the 90-minute KL-Singapore service: Despite what has been reported, there is a taxpayer subsidy to the current express rail link operated by the YTL group between Kuala Lumpur and the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. This is in the form of a charge imposed on every passenger who takes a flight out of KLIA. Effectively, all flyers subsidise the rail link, whether they take it to go to KLIA or not.

On Thursday, I started checking on what Guna had said. Seasoned journalists and those who have been on the beat, so to speak, had no knowledge of such an arrangement.

I decided to make a few calls, and hey presto! Yes, this was all part of the deal and how else could visitors and Malaysians have been suckered (albeit legally) into paying RM6 for this every time they left the KLIA for a foreign destination.

you are a sucker if you play with the big boys

Working on an average of RM5 per passenger, taking into account that domestic flights passengers had to cough up only RM2 while those bound for international destinations contribute RM6, and I used the low side – at 15 million departing passengers annually. It worked out to RM75 million and you don’t need a calculator to tote up the total over the past six years. Of course, there’ll be the usual defence to such lopsided deals and the familiar clichés will appear – it’s keeping cars off the road, it’s environment- friendly, people need a mass transporter, blah blah blah ...

THIS IS THE MIX

NOW MATCH IT ANYWAY YOU WANT

The Star, Saturday, May 11, 2002

YTL Corp Bhd expects 40%-owned Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL) to start making profits faster than earlier targeted as the number of passengers taking the rail link to the KL International Airport (KLIA) is said to be healthy.

“Judging from the response, we are optimistic that we will turn around faster than what people think,’’ said YTL Corp managing director Tan Sri Francis Yeoh. “We will have to see whether (the high numbers of passengers taking the rail service) is sustainable.’’

ERL was initially expected to post profits after seven years of operations.

Within 18 days of its operations, the rail link has chalked up more than 50,000 passengers.

In an earlier report, ERL executive chairman Datuk Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh had said the rail link was getting about 1,800 passengers a day in the beginning, but the number had increased to an average of 3,000 a day now. The target is 6,000 passengers a day in the first year of operations.

Kuala Lumpur, 13 October 2004

Datuk Seri Abdullah’s first year in office exceeded all expectations. He lost no time in putting his individual and impressive stamp on the leadership. The country and the business community were soon made aware of and under the influence of what I call the Badawi Factor.

First there was clear evidence of continuity. This was no regime change but a leadership change and with it a new Administration. The baton had been passed to a safe pair of hands justifying the trust and confidence in Tun Dr Mahathir placed in his choice.

At the same time there was equally a sense of the winds of change blowing, of them blowing – strongly – almost enough to knock us off our feet. Datuk Seri Abdullah hit the ground running with his vigorous housecleaning efforts and his bold, stringent reform initiatives.

And we liked what we saw – outright war on corruption, on patronage and the abuse of power. Not just rhetoric but an actual crackdown. There was a corresponding drive to improve the delivery system of the public service. This was to receive an outstanding endorsement in March with those stunning election results, the best ever in all our 47 years of Independence

ERL turns profitable in 2003

ERL runs a high-speed, non-stop rail service, KLIA Ekspress, from Kuala Lumpur Sentral to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang. It also operates KLIA Transit, a rapid transit service that makes three quick stops at key townships along its route. Despite challenging market conditions, led by the SARS outbreak and war in Iraq, ERL turned profitable in 2003. To boost profitability, it targets to raise its daily traffic from 3,000 to 4,000 in 2003, to 6000 by end-2005.

CLAP CLAP

Speaking to the graduates at the Faculty of Technology graduation ceremony, he (the deeply religious YTL head honcho) advises them: “We must not only harness the mind, we must also harness our hearts to re-engineer the world of man and bring it back to sanity and productive endeavour. Let us not suffer from spiritual amnesia. Let us build together a lasting world full of goodness, an everlasting Empire of the Minds with Heart.” He received a rousing ovation at the end of his speech.

HE IS LISTENING & MAKING AN EFFORT.

I have always believed that when a man is down, you do not go for the kill, only predators (aka animals) do that. Human respect and self-esteem dictate that if you are down two things can happen to you.....people will step over you (because you are in the way) or they will physically remove you (also because you are in the way.) To forstall these, one needs to pick oneself up and do what is right. The PM seemingly did just that. He picked himself up, he is beginning to listen to VOX POPULI. Pessimists will say it is too late, but it is never too late to redress wrongs. People with personal agendas will or those jockeying for their masters will throw all manner of brickbats. The common man with blinkers does these.

Malaysiakini's breaking news report that the PM has given more space to the usually disabled ACA to conduct their business:
The body, which is currently under the Prime Minister's Department, will now report directly to a new parliamentary committee - called the Anti-Corruption Committee - which will comprise representatives from both the government and opposition.

Earlier, the ACA, in efforts to re-engineer their much maligned and battered image through political and ministerial interference, had proposed that they be allowed to operate like Hong Kong’s Independent Commission Against Corruption. It must be remembered that in the 90’s it was the triads who ruled Hong Kong through the Government until the ICAC became fully independent. Today it is a very much respected body, attracting others to study their model. It is admirable that our ACA has taken steps to be an effective agency..... and doubly admirable that the PM has taken this agency away from his aegis: Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badwi today continued with his reform agenda by announcing that the Anti-Corruption Agency will become a fully independent body.

What next Datuk Seri? Like ensuring that the Chief Justice-in-waiting, an avowed UMNO hack is taken out of the judicial loop. DON’T ALLOW YOUR ENEMIES IN UMNO TO SAY THAT WHAT YOU DID ON 17 APRIL WAS MERELY A RED HERRING.

IT DEFINITELY IS NOT, IS IT?

I HELD BACK MY HAND ON THIS YOUNG PUNK'S FACE.

Last night I emceed a very dear friend, Mrs Catherine Jeremiah aka Catherine Goon's 60th Birthday. Her daughter Mirelle, whose wedding I also emceed asked me to do likewise for her mom. I agreed to because IT IS AN HONOR that I couldn't let slip by. Cat, as we all know her, has always put her family and friends before anything. She epitomises CARING. She is a fantastic wife, mother, granma, daughter, sister, sister-in-law and a daughter-in-law that any outlawed mother-in-law would always pray for but seldom get. She whips up the best mutton dalcha, everytime I get myself invited to the Jeremiahs. Her greatest fault though is EVERYBODY COMES FIRST.....and in the process she forgets about her own well-being, most often. But that's Cat for you and we all love her.....we do Cat.
Whilst taking a oxygen-break outside and topping up on the amber upper, I overheard a young punk (a gate-crasher?) pass this stale, over-used statement I used to hear during my early virginal days: "Why buy a cow when you can get the milk for free." This happened to be Cat's night and I was not going to spoil it. Fortunately for him, I was called back to the hall. If this was said in a pub, you bet the scenario would be.................Anyway, to this little sausage, the second part of the poster (above) is specially composed for you. Show it to your parents if you can muster enough girth in your little sausage. Well, I got it off my chest.....a good stiff milo would be appropriate after last night and todays lunch binge.

THIS POSTING IS DEDICATED TO CATHERINE JEREMIAH
AND MY DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, NOLIE, PAULINE, NANIE,POH LIN, SHELA
WHO GAVE UP THEIR JOBS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR KIDS.....A BIG SACRIFICE
AND TO ALL THE WOMEN BEHIND US ALL.

SCENES SELDOM SEEN

JUST CAN'T FIND WORDS TO DESCRIBE THIS! DID IT REALLY HAPPEN?
HOW COME OUR MSM COULDN'T FIND SPACE FOR THIS?
IF IT DID, THEN THIS POST IS A REMINDER THAT NOTHING IS PERFECT!
