CAN ANYONE OUT THERE HELP?

I am inflicted with a bad case of stiff neck. I dont remember doing anything naughty over the last 72 hours. The stiffness began last evening on my way to Kelab Sultan Sulaiman. It was still there when I said good morning to TV Smith, Stephen, Doctor Ravi, Zak, Arnaz and Loy at 4.00am this morning.
I got up at 9am and it was stiff, so stiff that looking right or left was painful. Someone told me to go bake my pillows in the sun. I did that. Another said that I should collect some urine, keep it overnight, heat it to boil tomorrow morning and do a hot compress tomorrow morning. Cant do that lah as I tutor some Form Five kids in Klang and I sure dont want to piss them off.....any of you bright sparks have some cure.....like talk to your granny or the kampung sage. I am serious.

I think your local Indian barber could help but its going to be painful. Get an experienced one, not those young punks with coloured hair.

If your neck is stiff when rotating to the left:
1. turn your neck to the left as far as you can manage it
2. get someone to place their hand on your right cheek
3. ask the person to hold their hand in that position, while you inhale, and rotate your neck to the right, i.e. you try and rotate your neck to the right while the other person trys to stop the rotation.
4. do that for 10sec, breathing in th entire time
5. exhale, and at the same time, let the other person push your cheek SLOWLY and GENTLY so that your head rotates to the left

We got taught this at med school and it works for the average stiff neck! You can even do it yourself. There's other ways that are more effective for really acute wry necks, but this is the only one that's simple enough to explain.
Hope this works!

Uncle, you can try a tightly rolled up towel - used as a pillow underneath your neck and get 8 hours sleep.

Not grandma's advice but dear mummy's.

Long long time ago, I had been told that the best doctors are the Indian barbers. You know those that used to be under some tree? Visit one of them, and let them crick your neck. Instant remedy!!

Stretch out your hand, with the palm facing downwards. If your neck pain is mainly on the left side, use the left hand and vice versa.

Ask someone to rub vigorously at the space between your second and third knuckle. The spot rubbed would be tender, do it for a few minutes and as often as you can.

Move your neck sideways and up and down at the same time. The result can be amazing. This is hand acupressure. The 'energy therapy' method as described in previous comments is also helpful.

Combine both methods and your recovery will be quick. I've used them on patients with excellent result.

I share your pain. I'm having one that's been with me for more than 3 weeks already. That's an old problem which keeps coming back every now and then. Doctors advised to exercise my neck muscles to prevent this from recurring. Swimming is the best. But I have my punching bag that works too. Only, I stopped that because there was a spondolysis to complicate matters. Now I have to go back to the punching bag. I'm 55. Younger than you, but already getting the blues of age. Now surviving on 'counter-pain'. Hope you get better soon.

It must be from looking up at the stage during's RPK's wedding anniversary celebration at the Sulaiman Stadium.
Do you have tingling and pain shooting down the arms and hands when you turn to either side and then look up? If so, you may have a nerve impingement as well. For this tou will need to visit a doc for a closer exam.
Simple remedy is to take 2 panadol when needed for the next few days.
You can do what hopelessmedical student advised by your self using the palms of both hands held together.
Place them on your forehead and as your press your head forwars, resists with the palms.Hold seven seconds and repeat seven times.
This reflexly relaxes the neck muscles.
Hope you get well soon.
BTW, i truly enjoy your blog, it's a must do for me everyday.

On nite of 8 March 2008 (before the results flows out), I commented in DSAI's blog that I hope to see a new Malaysia when I wake up on 9 March 2008. Now I want to say thank you very much to DSAI for giving Malaysia a new hope. May Pakatan Rakyat brings Malaysia to a better future for our children and grandchildren.

People....thanks for all your aids. I tried them all except the massage and barber. This morning I purchased some muscle relaxant and doing fine now. I should be as good as new tomorrow.
THANKS AGAIN. ALL HAVE BEEN HELPFUL.

take anti-inflammatory tablets regularly until the stiffness/pain disappears. Many choices, all of which can be bought without a prescription at any pharmacy in Malaysia (Boleh!). If your symptoms are not severe and already improving, ask for mefenamic acid 500 mg TDS. should do the trick. ignore the other advice above

Zorro,
I think the stiff neck is due to looking up in one direction for a long time and singing out loud; at "20,000 SAY WHY NOT: YOU READY? WE READY!"

The pain must have been worth it.

God bless for raising awareness and for being the disciplined master at la-salle sentul. I like you better now than b4. lol

People, stiffness very slight but improving with muscle relaxant pills plus those exercises you guys recommended. Thanks again for all your invaluable advice and concern.

Loganpal, thanks for visiting and appreciate your insights. It was sure worth it, the discomfort. Come over to the Press Club any Friday and share a few pints for old times sake.

the theory of baking the pillow under the sun do make sense. your pillow could be no longer soft and require baking under the sun to help the cotton inside the pillow to become dry and soft again after so long inside the room. that may help to position your neck during sleeping thru the next day.

Go take a good dose of Vitamin B. That works anytime.
