(Fortune Magazine) -- When Irvin Rosenfeld, 56, picks me up at the Fort Lauderdale airport, his SUV reeks of marijuana. The vice president for sales at a local brokerage firm, Rosenfeld has been smoking 10 to 12 marijuana cigarettes a day for 38 years, he says.

That's probably unusual in itself, but what makes Rosenfeld exceptional is that for the past 27 years, he has been copping his weed directly from the United States government.

Every 25 days Rosenfeld goes to a pharmacy and picks up a tin of 300 federally grown and rolled cigarettes that have been sent there for him by the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), acting with approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Rosenfeld smokes the marijuana to relieve chronic pain and muscle spasms caused by a rare bone disease. When he was 10, doctors discovered that his skeleton was riddled with more than 200 tumors, due to a condition known as multiple congenital cartilaginous exostosis. Despite seven operations, he still lives with scores of tumors in his bones.

Rosenfeld is one of four people in the United States whom the federal government supplies with medical marijuana. Each is a living anomaly because, officially, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, NIDA, and the FDA all take the position that marijuana has "no currently accepted medical use."

Will this happen in Malaysia? Pot Luck, that is. Fat chance!

We should go back to the days when the AMA supported cannabis cures. ‘Medical Marijuana’ is given out legally to only a handful of people while the rest of us are forced into a system that relies on chemicals. Pot is only healthy for the human body.

WORLD HUNGER COULD END. A large variety of food products can be generated from hemp. The seeds contain one of the highest sources of protein in nature. ALSO: They have two essential fatty acids that clean your body of cholesterol. These essential fatty acids are not found anywhere else in nature! Consuming pot seeds is the best thing you could do for your body. Eat uncooked hemp seeds.

Marijuana should NEVER have been outlawed in the first place. It's one of Mother Nature's gifts to us - so many uses, apart from the obvious - the fibrous stalks make the best ropes, can be squeezed for oil, and the pulp compressed and mixed with other substances to make very versatile and durable alloys for building materials, ships' sails, and so on. It was a very sinister force indeed that pressured Congress to declare marijuana illegal - and from there the criminalization spread throughout the world. In the more enlightened and civilized countries, nobody gets arrested anymore for something as harmless (and silly) as smoking pot!

Zorro, marijuana is now legalised in some states in the United States, but for medicinal purposes only. You need to have a doctor's prescription to buy at designated locations authorised by the state.Soon it is expected that more states will follow through, but eventually it will be legalised, just as alcohol and tobacco.

My niece in UITM says there's at least 2-3 peddlers on campus.
So outlawed or not, it's so easily attainable in our country.

Bro Zorro,

Visit any kedai kopi in get stuff from Panama, Honduras, Mexico and of course their home grown herbs.A well prepared joint that comes in plastic test tubes costs only 3 Euros.......great spliff man.And most kedai kopis there allow you to puff it inside their premises with great Rasta music wailing in the background... and listening to Buffalo Soldier there is different from listening it here bro !!

Legalize It!!!! ( check out Peter Tosh)

Thanks for being outspoken on this issue. Marijuana has long been discriminated in this country especially when Malaysia's law actually classifies it in the same class as Heroine which is ridiculous. It should be decriminalized at least. Malaysians will be a peaceful lot if that happens. Much respect!

The law of mother nature is very simple. If it is natural then it is for all human.
Points risen by Antares are right.
We have the outlawed ISA but it is "legal". But the ganja plant which is all natural from mother nature got the ban instead.
* i found out that addicts are not hooked from it as they prefer something stronger and lasting and it is the safest drug naturally available.
It is a waste that most teenagers from a particular race getting wasted sniffing industrial glue with permanent brain damage.

Najib is a great economic strategist as he gives duit raya to civil servants and pensioners (Zorro Bernard inclusive?) so tht they can spend in Hari Raya period to stimulate consumption and our economy.

Now that's his blue ocean strategy!

Rakyat rejoice!

Yassin Abu, good try. I resigned from the teaching profession after 19 years and giving 24hours notice of my resignation I forfeited my one month salary, which was a fair law. I lost my gratuity and thus my pension. No regrets though and I am glad that my wife and mum will enjoy the duit raya of RM500.

As to your understanding of the Blue Ocean Strategy I take exception and register my reservation. BOS when applied successfully will eliminate your competition with your new product or innovation. In Najib's case, for BOS to be applied successfully, he would have to complete negate the 3Ms. You don't have to agree.

"...takeaway: heavy marijuana use doesn’t seem to cause any sort of lasting brain damage. All the negative side-effects are relatively temporary. (But those side-effects are real, so don’t try to study, drive or play chess while high. You really will perform much worse on most tasks.) Furthermore, the sort of anxiolytic giddiness triggered by THC comes with its own unexpected benefits, which is probably why humans have been self-medicating with cannabis for thousands of years."
