I have never met him and came upon his BLOG when he posted a comment on my blog whilst I was in KT. I developed a somewhat close affinity with this man. I thoroughly enjoyed his trust and parry. I enjoyed his brutal honesty. On 14 Jan I wrote a piece dedicated to him HERE. On 15 Jan, on an invitation to meet after KT he posted this comment:

On 22 Jan my posting (HERE) asked Pade Doh and Sakmangkol AK47 if it was possible that Pak Lah may scuttle Najib's hopes by calling for a snap election. Datuk Sak did a posting. Here Wenger also obliged with a rebuttal posting, but only after he made this comment:
When I began to see how the NST and the Star surgically dissected Anwar Ibrahim in their tabloids, mattress and all, I began to be more discerning. I had many friends in both papers, but fortunately they were sports journalist, and had nothing to do in the operating theatre. It was after the court maneouvred DSAI into Sungai Buloh, and the street protests began that I began to look for another source of information. That was my introduction to blogosphere (which at that time was not called thus). I began to read MGG Pillai avidly. Then came along Jeff Ooi's Screenshots and when I decided to put up a blog of my own, Dr Bakri Musa was one of the early 5 in my blogroll. The good doctor has been criticised often by you-know-who for sniping from a distance. Of course it has to be from a distance.....no sniper worth his salt will come up to you, put the Glok between your eyes and say: Die. Blogging from a distance, Dr Bakri's writings convey a better sense of the country that some of our dead-wood politicians do not even attempt to possess. Most people regret the past, worry about the future and fuck up the present. Dr.Bakri writes about the present......even from a distance.

Eradicating Corruption
Corruption can never be completely eradicated, as greed and dishonesty are basic human traits. However, unless there is a strong commitment not to tolerate it, corruption will by default becomes acceptable, which is the same thing as encouraging it.
In combating corruption, it is crucial to send a strong signal from the very top. The remarkable success of Singapore in tackling corruption was precisely this. Its leaders took bold and highly visible steps early on; with that, the gravity of the message sunk through very quickly.
While closing down bad institutions would quickly send out a strong and effective message, it would penalize the few workers who are honest and diligent. This could be remedied by redeploying them, assuming you know who they are. As effective and radical as that method is, there is the added risk that powerful constituents and beneficiaries of those agencies would protest, as demonstrated by the Indonesian experience. If their supporters are strong or big enough, they could cripple or bring down the government, and you could end up with a worse situation.
Current efforts at reigning in abuses in the police force, so well documented in the Royal Commission Report, are stymied by the Force’s many supporters. UMNO Youth strenuously opposed the Commission’s recommendation for an independent complaints bureau.
The trick would be to pick the institutions that are so blatantly corrupt such that the public is totally disgusted with, or one that does not have a powerful constituency.
The Road Department, Customs Agency, and the Land Office would be appropriate candidates. Shut them down and contract their services out. The public would applaud the ensuing crispness and efficiency in service. In addition to such decisive and dramatic actions (“shock and awe!”) at the macro level aimed at whole institutions, we need even stronger actions at the micro or personnel level by going after the “big fish.”
There are two possible avenues of actions: through executive decision and through the criminal justice system. The Prime Minister could take executive action by outright firing, demanding the resignation, or not appointing (or reappointing) ministers and other top appointees who have the slightest hint of impropriety. The threshold is necessarily low and arbitrary; whatever the Prime Minister decides. He sets the standards. Innocent till proven guilty is fine in a criminal court, but not in positions demanding high public trust and integrity.
The other is through aggressive criminal prosecution. Here the burden of proof is rightly high. There should not be malicious or politically motivated prosecutions, that would be worse. The temptations would be there in order to demonstrate one’s resolve.
Prosecutorial zeal and misconduct can come in many guises, most often in pursuit of fame, political ambition, or outright corruption itself. However, if a prosecutor were to leverage his successful litigation career into something political, that is his right.
Prosecutors should not be hamstrung by political considerations; this danger exists where the Anti Corruption Agency is not independent. Nor should the ACA wait for an ironclad case before proceeding. Sometimes just disclosing the evidence in open court even if that does not result in conviction would serve a wider useful public purpose.
The corrupt would not willingly part with their ill-gotten gains by hiring the best legal talent. That is their right, and should be zealously protected. There is no place for kangaroo courts; substituting one corrupt system for another is not the answer. Nor do I believe that corruption is a capital offense.
Abdullah had two rare opportunities early in his tenure to demonstrate his resolve in fighting corruption, and he squandered both. The first involved Kasitah Gaddam, a low-level cabinet minister charged with corruption; his trial is still pending. The second was Isa Samad, a senior figure in both UMNO and the cabinet who was found guilty of “money politics” by his party peers. Abdullah should have publicly demanded their resignations; instead he let them dangle in the breeze. They eventually resigned voluntarily, more in response to widespread public disgust. Abdullah missed a rare and splendid opportunity to send an important message. Worse, it appeared that he condoned such gross lapses of corrupt behaviors.
As planned the Special Bunch (SB) took a quick lunch at the Wharf and in convoy proceeded to meet the others at Binary College opposite the IOI Mall.We had decided that we will not add to the congestion by being at the UH Mortuary and at the Taipan Police Station where the funeral entourage would stop for a ritual. Earlier we were informed that 6 people were arrested at the UH and a massive 3000 crowd had waited at the USJ police station where Kugan was allegedly tortured to death.
On receiving news that the hearse was on its way to Puchong we zipped over to the 14th Mile to await the cortege. A crowd was already assembled and we were advised to walk the last mile to the cemetery with Kugans family, as parking would be a problem.
Before the arrival of the funeral procession, as expected the Police made their presence ostentatiously. They parked a distance away. Like us, they knew that this was not the time to be confrontational. That is where they parked and that was where they remained until we saw then again at around 6.00pm.
When the hearse arrived the crowd had amassed and we all began our walk in a slight drizzle, I happened to walk with an almost Indian crowd and I did invite a few curious glances. One guy was brazen enough to ask me if I was from the police (quite a number of police have paunches like mine, yes?). I jokingly told him I was from the SB but quickly explained that I am from the Special Bunch. I doubt he knew the significance. It began to rain ......and then it came down in buckets.
Some walked and some had their motors. I looked for one without a pillion. Madavan was god-sent. But we all got drenched. When I alighted I pressed an ang-pow into Madavan's palms. He refused and said that our presence was more valuable. I impressed on him that this was an ang-pow because it is Chinese New Year. He accepted the small token. The rain, that was torrential during our ride just stopped when we reached the cemetry.
I stayed away from the burial site and took the opportunity to take off my shirt and wring dry whatever was possible. It was more comfortable after that. Spent and weary, the mother of the late Kugan walks away and I had the opportunity to convey my condolence. Some media people asked me whether she would accede to an interview. I told them to just look at her condition and they understood.
On Friday 23 I asked for his and his Deputy's head on a platter. From across the seas, a Malaysian senior lawyer requests for the same, but he wants the Home Minister's head first.

Convention demands that Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar should immediately resign for the actions of those under his direct authority, said senior lawyer Gopal RajKumar.
Gopal, who is currently based in Australia, was responding to the case of 22-year-old car theft suspect Kugan Ananthan who died in police custody last week.
"It's becoming more and more apparent that there exists within the Malaysian society, a culture of abject and unmitigated fear and ignorance of what is esoterically termed the law," he said in an email to Malaysiakini.
"The many varied responses, excuses and attempts at justifying Kugan's death, while in police custody, are a manifestation of the breakdown of law and order at the very highest level of the state.
"The injuries resulted in his death. Even if it did not, it points to something more sinister than merely attempting to elicit information under interrogation," he added.
According to Gopal, the minister's culpability in the 'sordid affair' is implied by his and the police department’s own ‘misconduct’ and where it cannot be immediately proven, he must accept inference as punishment based on 'his own standards and that of his charges'.
The police, he said, had applied their own collective ideas of what constitutes guilt and punishment outside of the Federal Constitution and legislative directions.
"Further, he (Syed Hamid) should quit because of the enormity of the crime perpetrated against Kugan, the ultimate sanction against a life without lawful authority. Kugan is not merely an individual but each and everyone of us who identifies with being human," he added.
Not an isolated case
Gopal also pointed out that the youth's death, which has been classified as murder, was not an isolated case.
The lawyer cited estimates from undisclosed sources to show that the authority of the home minister has been tainted with the deaths of more than 1,000 people in custody over a period of time 'with no plausible excuse or reason available'.
He asked if ministers are "competent, capable or civilised enough to hold office when they demonstrably lack any quality for human values, respect or dignity by their deafening silence in the face of murder."
"There has to be also a changing of the guard from the incumbent prime minister - who suffers from the arrogance of ignorance in the highest office, to one who is more pragmatic and deft in dealing with such issues with less equanimity.
"What could otherwise have been an administrative wrong-doing has, by default, now taken on racial, international and illegal dimensions of such a magnitude for which all Malaysians will eventually pay heavily for failing to act on time," he added.
Gopal expressed hope that Malaysians would stand together for the preservation of a principal and the maintenance of their laws.
"If even one precedent is allowed to depart from the Federal Constitution and the laws, then no one is safe," he said.

23 people died in the country’s police lock-ups between 2002 and July 2003. Out of this total, 16 died in 2002. During the same period, 425 prisoners died during their incarceration, 237 of them in 2002; this is an average of 19.75 deaths per month. The monthly average for the first seven months of 2003 rose to 26.86 deaths per month, with 188 fatalities reported in prisons nationwide. Deputy Home Minister Chor Chee Hueng refused to specify the cause of the deaths.
Just remember, you were the main complainant that brought about this Sedition case against my friend Raja Petra.
After appearing once and making a boo-boo about plasticine you went missing because you knew you were in for some frying from defence counsel J Chandra and Gobind Deo, I am just hoping that that training course in Taiwan has taught you how to be a professional cop and thus throw back at Gobind the tag he tatooed on you, i.e. you are a useless investigator.
If you do not appear, I will suggest to the Police Instpector General, to have you assigned to an investigation that is not so taxing and that requires less investigatibe skills - go look for the three pairs of shoes stolen from Tun Daim's house.

Superintendant Gan Tack Guan, the chief investigator of the murder of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu said that it was not C4 which was used to blow up her body. He said “If I am not wrong, one kind of plasticine explosive was used to blow up her body at an empty place at Puncak Alam.
It was not C4 (a type of explosive),” Supt Gan, who is Interpol’s National Centre Bureau assistant director based at Bukit Aman, told the packed courtroom.
Questioned further by Gobind Singh, Supt Gan said he did not know how the explosive was placed on the woman’s body before it was detonated.
“I was together with (another investigating officer) Asst Supt Tonny Lunggan," he said, prompting Gobind Singh to retort that “you are a useless investigating officer”.(Tonny is the guy who invited PI Bala for fish-head curry dinner the same day he made his first Statutory Declaration. YES?)

Malaysia Today editor Raja Petra Raja Kamarudin claimed the prosecution was deliberately delaying his sedition trial when the complainant in his case was not available to be questioned by his defence team on Thursday 18 Dec 2008.
“Why must the prosecution bring this case to court today just to amend the charge and postpone it?,” Raja Petra, 58, told the Sessions Court.
“How long are we going to wait for Supt Gan Tack Guan (chief investigator in the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder case and the complainant in Raja Petra’s sedition trial)?
“He was on medical leave earlier and is now gone for training,” he said

(The court went into recess to await the Medical Certicate. I just wonder if the MC was obtained from a Government Hospital, as required, and did it indicate that the applicant was unfit for work?)
What training! He is training on how to 'manufacture evidences' and how to fine tune the art of cut and paste job.
Justice delayed is justice denied.
Supt Gan Tack Guan (chief investigator in the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder case) was not subpoenaed. Then why fix date for trial if one is not serious about attending court. The courts should know better. The training could have been postponed. Even the courts do not uphold the constitution.

Lawyer Gobind Singh Deo asked the court to direct the prosecution to close the case if they were unable to call Supt Gan to be cross-examined.
“Supt Gan is aware that the hearing has been fixed for four days but he deliberately chose to go away. He is a police officer and should know the procedure,” he contended.
Rozina said Supt Gan was not subpoened and set three days from Feb 10 for continuation of the trial.

I met PAULA KHOO for the first time during the PJ vigil but we did not spend time together. We met again on the day that RPK was released from Kaumunting. She had thumbed a ride with Kasee from Penang. She informed me that she would attend the 2nd phase of candlelight vigils for the release of all ISA detainees. Earlier, Penangites had organised 6 consecutive vigils asking for the release of Raja Petra.
Paula had volunteered to emcee the vigil and armed with her guitar she entertained the crowd with "The Song of Freedom". The police then ordered the participants to disperse which they obediently did. Paula too packed her guitar and proceeded to where her husband had parked. It was here that the Police decided to bundle her into their car and took her to Jalan Patani Police HQ.
Angela and Jongcalled in from Penang to say that the vigil was broken-up by the Police and that organiser Paula (who blogs as masterwordsmith.blogspot.com) was taken to the police station. The participants are on their way to lend her support.

I am shocked to hear that Paula aka masterwordsmith has been arrested by the police. She's just a conscientious objector to the ISA and, if you read her blog posts, you wouldn't be able to find anyone more reasonable than her. This episode of police action is a wrong, wrong move.

paula was released at about 1.00am. many of us (the organisers and a few others non organisers) were at the police station waiting for her from the time she was arrested (9.30). we do know of her arrest when she was bundled in the police car. we called liew chin toong and he was there with paula until her release. paula called rhina bhar, the lawyer.

Umno must change before the people pass a "death sentence" on it, Home Minister and party supreme council member Syed Hamid Albar told Bernama.
He said change was timely as the party's image had been badly tarnished by cases involving members detained for alleged corruption by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
"Embracing change and cleaning up the party must be discussed by the party's top leaders with members.
"Everyone, including the president and supreme council members must take responsibility so that our party is not given the death sentence," he prophetically cautioned.
But I think there isn’t much time to revive the party when signs of rigor mortis are evident for all to see: 5 states lost, two by-elections lost, a murder case running awry and suspect, billions lost by Khazana and GLCs, dirty tricks, money politics, blatant greed by its members, police brutality resulting in over a thousand deaths in police lockup over the years
However, there is an infinitesimal chance, if his next statement can hold any sincerity:
He said changes to be effected should also include making the party more people-friendly.
EXACTLY!Like having your police personnel stop harassing the rakyat at peaceful assemblies; like no more deaths while in police custody; and most of allGET RID OF THE ISA.
If you can do that there is a chance of resuscitating UMNO and I will not allow the monkey to slap you again.

So what is this monkey-slapping saga? Read on…….
There was once a hat-seller, named Hassan Albar who passed by a forest on his way back from the market. The weather was very hot and so he decided to take a nap under one of the trees, so he left his whole basket of hats by the side.
A few hours later, he woke up by some sounds. The next thing he realized was that all his hats were gone. He heard some monkeys on the tree and so he looked up. To his surprise, the tree was full of monkeys and they had taken all his hats.
The hat-seller, Hassan Albar, sat down and thought of how he could get the hats down. He started scratching his head. The next moment, he realized that the monkeys were doing the same action.
Next, he took down his own hat and saw the monkeys did exactly the same. An idea came to him, he took his hat and threw it on the floor and the monkeys did that too.
So he finally managed to get all his hats back.

Fifty years later, his grandson, named Syed Hamid (aka Si Botak –ISA Minister), also became a hat-seller and had heard this monkey story from his grandfather, Hassan Albar.
