Australian Prime Minister calls general election for Aug. 21
Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has announced that a general election will be held on August 21 and has called on Governor-General Quentin Bryce to dissolve Parliament.
For days, speculations ran rampant as to when Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard would call for an election and when it would take place.
On Saturday, the Prime Minister announced that Australians will head to the polls on Aug. 21 when the country holds a general election, according to the Telegraph. Gillard called on GG Quentin Bryce to dissolve Parliament.
“This election, I believe, presents Australians with a very clear choice. This election is about the choice as to whether we move Australia forward or go back,” said Gillard in Caberra, reports Xinhua. “Moving forward with confidence also requires a strong set of convictions and a clear set of values. So in this, the forthcoming election campaign, I'll be asking the Australian people for their trust. I'll be asking Australians for their trust so that we can move forward together.”
