Isn't this the same cowdunk-brained fler who suggested that Cantonese Hong Kong TV series be dubbed into Mandarin so that everyone can understand? What a stupid idea from a fler with so-called ministerial quality, just because you are either a Fukkienese, Hainanese or whatever who doesn't understand Cantonese, who has to kill a Chinese dialect so that he can understand what's being said. Then you might as well dub all TV programs to the Bahasa Malaysia language so that the whole country can understand! Poolah! What a dickhead!

Mandarin should be used to unite Chinese of all dialects groups.
Having different dialect groups will not unite the chinese as we are becoming a minority.
Anon 4:26....that's fine, I am not arguing with that. But Chinese dialects are part and parcel of our Chinese heritage and culture so let's keep those okay? Even in China, people still speak their own dialects in different parts of the country but Mandarin is used extensively for common communication. No reason for us all to learn to speak different and languages, afterall we can speak English, Malay, Mandarin (well at least I can and I am sure a lot of people do too) so no reason why we need Mandarin to bring us all together. It's just a lame excuse if you ask me!

is that so...I wasn't aware of this. But my point is, by all means study Mandarin, whether in sjk or wherever. It's not only the main language for 1.3 billion Chinese but it is also becoming a very important language internationally. And it is great to see our Malay and Indian brothers and sisters studying the language more and more. Kudos to their enlightened parents, cos it is always a plus to learn another language other than your mother tongue. And what more in this country, you have all the opportunities to do so.
But my point about the Chinese dialects is, and since we only speak them at home mostly, let's keep them because it is our heritage and culture. But don't go dub television programmes in certain dialects just because not everyone can understand them. Like Hokkien dialect programmes from Taiwan, I don't watch them because I can't understand them but that doesn't mean they have to be dubbed into Mandarin so that people like me can understand, like what that dickhead minister was suggesting for the HK Cantonese programmes. Have you ever watched a HK movie dubbed in Mandarin, which they often do in China? It is horrible because it loses the original "taste" of the dialogue and true meanings of what's being said. And lastly, not all Chinese in Malaysia speak or understand Mandarin!
