WAH! MACHO TOUGH LIKE.

On Sunday 6 July, the Star’s Wong Chun Wai in his On the Beat column put the heat on the Prime Minister. He urged Pak Lah to take a firm leadership and that it was not good enough being nice. He finally told the Prime Minister to use the stick to stop the rot.

Dutifully, the Prime Minister today obliged with this blister: “Allegations and news championing those who broke the law through SMS, Blogs and YouTube were akin to TREACHERY!

He wanted “bloggers to stop speculating and spreading rumours on the Internet. I want to tell the blogs to stop all this. They are also responsible for what has happened. (What happened?)* The best thing they could do is to stop.” (Bloggers will stop only if TREACHERY AGAINST THE RAKYAT CEASES!)

*parenthesis mine.

So let’s get back to what is akin to TREACHERY.

Do we have a Treachery Act? The British had one specifically for WWII. It reads like this:

If, with intent to help the enemy, any person does, or attempts or conspires with any other person to do any act which is designed or likely to give assistance to the naval, military or air operations of the enemy, to impede such operations of His Majesty's forces, or to endanger life, he shall be guilty of felony and shall on conviction suffer death.”

(Bloggers are quite safe here because we have no intention of impeding the operations of His Majesty’s Forces….)

The Treachery Act 1940 was suspended in February 1946, and was repealed in 1967. However the Treason Act 1945 abolished the special status of treason and enabled treason to be proved with the normal rules of evidence.

For sure we do not have the Treachery Act per se (yet?) but we have the Internal Security Act and the Sedition Act.

Probably the PM was intending to use this on bloggers. How can he because , I quote “The fifth and current Prime Minister of Malaysia, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, went on the record in 1988 to state "If we want to save Malaysia and Umno, Dr Mahathir (then Prime Minister) must be removed. He uses draconian laws such as the Internal Security Act to silence his critics."

The year before, he had also stated "Laws such as the Internal Security Act have no place in modern Malaysia. It is a draconian and barbaric law."

However

In 2003 when he became Prime Minister, Abdullah called the ISA "a necessary law," and argued "We have never misused the Internal Security Act. All those detained under the Internal Security Act are proven threats to society." But the rakyat and the opposition parties believe it is a threat to Umno rather than a threat to the country.

See how they play ping-pong with us with their flip-flops

Popular Opposition Leader, the late Tan Chee Khoon said about the ISA:

“This infernal and heinous instrument has been enacted by the Alliance Government at a time when the emergency was supposed to be over. Then it promptly proceeds to embody all the provisions of the Emergency Regulations which during the Emergency had to be re-enacted every year, but now it is written into the statute book ad infinitum...

Ping-pong game not over yet,

Prior to becoming Prime Minister, Mahathir had also adhered to a critical view of the ISA. In 1966, when Mahathir spoke out in support of the Internal Security (Amendment) Bill 1966 as a backbencher, he stated that "no one in his right senses like[s] the ISA. It is in fact a negation of all the principles of democracy."

After becoming Prime Minister however the former premier had little if any hesitation using the law to suppress what he termed racialism but was seen by some as a move against his political opponents, the most notable of events being the infamous Operasi Lalang in 1987. But Najib was left scot-free and he was the most guilty.

PING PONG IS AN INTERESTING GAME BUT NOT WHEN YOU ARE THE BALL....THEY SLICE, SCREW AND SMASH THE BALL IN A CONFINED AREA.

Thank you for exposing the insincerity and hypocrisy and inconsistency of these people. They got a few bloggers to "go on strike" and they go all out to discredit the postings of bloggers like you who are not stopping by smearing what you post as "mere lies". Those who are discerning know who are the real and habitual liars. They must not be given the upperhand again.

"They are also responsible for what has happened."

You can be sure this was spoken from the heart. What he meant was, " Serve you right Penang. You will now pay the consequences for not voting BN. I will punish you real good because, I paklah, is a vengeful man. You can forget about any substantial funding from the Federal Government from now on."

I am a little bit confused with the translation of what constitutes treason by the pm and what we the common, law abiding Malaysians think is treason.
1. isn't it treason to sabotage the food, natural resources, revenue producing capabilities of a nation, i.e. bernas , maju-ikan, petronas and others are exploited, destroyed by greedy corrupt bn members, like that umno cronies of dubious character who was given the bernas monopoly to increase the revenue of bernas by increasing the rice producing capability of the country, what happened, bernas practically killed the farmers, by bringing in cheaper rice from thailand, assets were stripped and sold off, farmers were economically killed off. petronas, a huge revenue earner where has the money gone, MOONSOON CUP, A 300 MILLION YEARLY EXTRAVAGANZA FOR THE ELITE, TO RUB SHOULDERS WITH THE ORANG PUTIH AND SPEAKING ENGRISH, langkawi cup, maju-ikan, why is it thailand is one of the major exporters of seafood wheras in malaysia our fishermen sell their diesel to thai or indonesian fisherman, why they make more money that way, if they catch fish they are paid peanuts, where is the cold chain express, all talk and money dissappeared. this was for seafood brought ashore fresh to be cleaned, blast frozen thantransported, money was granted but what was the outcome, gravy trail for cronies. isn't it treason to steal subsidised fertiliser meant for farmers, finding its way to private interprise and than sold off. isn't it treason to buy fighter jets for the protection where, if its any other country it would be manufacturer to nation negotiations, but in malaysia 500million commisions paid off to cronies,. MR PRIMO MINISTER AL TIDUR THAT CONSTITUTES TREASON, NOT BLOGS WRITING ABOUT THE MISDEEDS AND CORRUPTION OF YOUR SCUMBAGS IN UMNO AND BN ROBBING THE COUNTRY DRY. SO PLEASE DO US ALL A FAVOUR TALK WITH SOME BRAINS OR SACK YOUR SPEECH WRITERS, BECAUSE YOU CONTINUE TO SOUND LIKE A MORON.

Abdullah just lost his balls..that is the reason for his mindless rants.

We don't need the foreign fund managers to bring this country down. The country is on self destruct mode with the clueless leader trying still playing politics.

In case he has forgotten, he is the PM. Wake up please.

The MP's alleged lewd non-verbal message can now be approved as a standard and acceptable body language. Why not?

After it was used in parliament the PM did not come out roaring against such lewd gestures right?

So teachers take note. If your students use it in class you must take the example set by the PM: Do not immediately react or take punitive action.

I remember when Mr. Bernard Khoo was our teacher in the 1960's, any young brat who dared use any such sign language would hear the sweet stroke of the rotan on his butt you bet. And there was no time wasted in meeting out punishment.

And so we grew up to be citizens who also taught our children all about decent and sensible, respectable communication.

But now what are our parliamentarians and politicians teaching our children?

Or maybe the rebuttal from them would be, "stop making a storm out of a harmless gesture that was made out of provocation."

Wonder what the boss of the implicated MP has got to say?

Your juxtaposition of statements made for and against the ISA by the former and current PM were based on recorded statements.

If bloggers can state the facts (being statements made ON RECORD), then that is responsible blogging. It is not treachory by the blogger/messenger. Those statements were made by ....

Then, it means whoever we put to POWER, be it from BN or PR, the ISA would not be wiped off. Even countries like USA, UK, and Singapore have it.

Oppositions fight ISA merely because (1)they need something that they can fight for, and (2)they want to be popular with the voters so that the voters would fanatically put them to power.

However, as soon as they're in CONTROL, they too find it necesary to left the ISA be untouched or with a little bit modification/alteration/improvement they will change the name into something else, just to please their supporters.

They too will manipulate their controlled-media to mislead people and justifying their actions to be for the GOOD of the NATION.

And, their leaders later will give them reasons to justify their actions to maintain the ISA.

The sad part is their supporters later will have to agree with their leaders to approved the use of ISA(who probably will be change to diff name) in the name of NATION STABILITY, ORDER, and PEACE.

These are no fictions. I've observed other issues that the PAS/DAP/PKR is against for, and later go against their beliefs. Most notably and obviously is PAS leaders themselves.

The leading actors and actresses will be change, but the story is the same.

It reminds me of a classic and famous satirical novel by George Orwell - "Animal Farm".

I once read somewhere that Hamdan Adnan, speaking as mass communications lecturer, said there were 47 pieces of law and ordinances that curb freedom of speech then (during the Mahathir era) and I don't think any of these have been repealed.

Some of these laws are:
- In 1948, the Printing Presses Ordinance was introduced to control ownership of printing presses and publications. This was repealed and in its place came the Printing Presses and Publications Act in 1984.

- The Sedition Act 1948 gives a vague definition of sedition. Clauses like "to bring into hatred or contempt or to excite disaffection against any Ruler or against any Government", "to excite the subjects of the Ruler or the inhabitants ...", "to bring into hatred or contempt or to excite disaffection against the administration of justice in Malaysia or in any State" is subject to interpretation. The Sedition Act comes into force even in Parliament where issues are meant to be raised without fear. Malaysia is one few countries that is still holding on to this piece of law

- In 1960, the Internal Security Act came into force enabling preventive detention without trial.

- In 1972, the Official Secrets Act took effect. Amendments were made to the Act in 1986, adding provisions for mandatory prison terms.

- In 1988, the Broadcasting Act brought the electronic media under government control.

- In 1998, came the Communications and Multimedia Act which provides a regulatory framework for communications and multimedia information and content services. Mahathir promised not to censor the Internet to ensure the success of the Multimedia Super Corridor, so as not to deter foreign investment. In practice the provisions of the Act restricting telecommunications interception appear to be regularly ignored or overridden by other statutes, including the ISA.

Thank you for taking up the cudgel re wcw and his infamous "wield the stick" leader.

This worthless blob of protoplasm is clearly the peoples' enemy and a Mahathir admirer cum apologist.

I am sure his not-too-subtle hint to the PM to invoke the ISA is really aimed deliberately at making the PM even more unpopular, rather than any any real concern for a non-existent state of
'dangerous times.'

Having joined the ranks of bloggers after first being one of those who condemned them, and then making it seem as if he is a reformed MSM character, wcw has now shown his true Stalistic/Maoist colours.

Zorro, it is the duty of all bloggers to expose these scum who still support the ISA, Sedition abd other oppressive Unconstitutinal laws.

Plesae send out a bloggers alert.

I feel you are overreacting. In this case, whatever Pak Lah said when he used the word "bloggers". Siapa yang makan cili dia terasa pedasnya lo....

If you are confident that you are not spreading lies, rumours, malicious content, then what have the bloggers have to worry about?

zorro said...

Suzy, the PM has the mechanism so why doesn't he come out straight and name those irresponsible bloggers. I am not worried. I just dont agree with generalisation. Why generalise and hope to scare us? This borders on immaturity. I take umbrage when he takes this pot shots at bloggers. I thought he admitted that collectively bloggers thru their incessant efforts pre8March denied BN the 2/3 majority. If he wants to use the stick go ahead, not magic wands!
Suzy dahling, you think it is fun spreading lies? Unless, you belong to that group who are told to spread lies. Fortunately, most of us don't do that and as far as possible we will continue to not do that.

You are saying that I spread lies... :( NO!! Definitely not, it breaks my heart sometimes to read such blogs along with their atrocious comments, that's why. I just feel that bloggers themselves do have some social responsibilities and ethics to uphold too. Coming from you, it is good to hear that you are not promoting such ill mannered content on your blog. Saying that too, you should have nothing to worry about then, and I will visit more often then :)
