DO APPLES GROW IN CHERAS?

MY friend the Nightcaller wrote this in his latest posting:

Malaysian's own sole Royal Professor Ungku Aziz consider internet and television as "enemy" to books because they erode the habit of reading amongst society as what Malaysia is currently facing.

I respect the man but I do not agree with him. I am doing more reading and RESEARCH than ever. Today I ventured into APPLE POLISHING - its mechanics and pitfalls. Here goes:

Apple polishing has a number of synonyms, which include brown-nosing, false flattering, toadying and our very own bodeh-ing, umpuh-ing, tripod-ing, ass kissing . In all cases, the idea of apple polishing comes from apples given to teachers at school in order to curry favor with the teacher. It can be a mute appeal in the form of a gift to like and thus grade a student better. Alternately, in speech, especially where you want to argue a point, apple polishing is an appeal to flattery and emotion, and thus considered a logical fallacy.

Trying to get a teacher or a boss to like you in order to give you better grades or a promotion is a common practice. While it is fine to like a teacher or boss and tell him or her so, constant flattery meant to gain something from the person is apple polishing. It’s an oft used but disparaged technique for getting what you need but possibly don’t deserve.

Children often try apple polishing out at quite a young age. For example: “Mom, you are so beautiful. Can I have a cookie?” Whether or not the child really regards Mom as beautiful, the compliment is meant to gain favor with her so that she will deliver the cookie. Further it connects two unrelated topics: mom’s beauty and desire for cookies. This is a fallacious argument since Mom’s beauty has nothing to do with whether or not she will dole out the cookies. In fact, the mom in this case would do well to wait for a while before giving the cookie to not reinforce apple polishing.

As children age, they often become a little more subtle in their apple polishing attempts. Consider the following statement: “Professor, I learned more in your class than any class I’ve ever had before. I’m even thinking of minoring in history now. I just wish my grade reflected what I’ve learned.” Obviously, a professor in need of flattery may be slightly swayed by a student singing his or her praises until it comes to the sticky matter of grades. Suddenly the praise is suspicious and is apple polishing because it comes with a request to change a grade.

Another method of apple polishing is to begin by a bit of flattery that works into winning an argument. “Since we’re both intelligent, I think you’ll agree with me that “X” is important.” The person constructing the argument first establishes the intelligence of both people, but more importantly he establishes that the person with whom he wishes to gain agreement is intelligent. Then comes the hook, “I think we’ll both agree.” Unfortunately, the statement that a person is intelligent does not have a logical connection to “X is important.”

This last form is a frequent one used by politicians and by many commercials. For example something could be marketed to the consumer “with taste,” flattering those who buy the product into thinking they have “good taste.” A politician might say, “I know all good Malaysians will join me in this fight.” If you do otherwise than join the politician, you are not a good 1Malaysian, according to the statement.

The basic formula for apple polishing is the following:

1) Use flattery to the person or audience to which you appeal
2) Make a claim or a request
3) Insist that since the flattery is true, the request or claim is valid.

(excerpts from Wisegeek)

Of course the First Lady million ringgit ad did not follow the above.

The whole of commerce and industry have gone berserk with the figure 1. Everything is 1this and 1that. NEVER HAS 1ASS BEEN KISSED BY SO MANY WITH SUCH ENTHUSIASM AND DELIRIOUS ABANDON.

The past two weeks has not been good to the Tun. The poor turnout at Trengganu vexed him big-time and now this Ethiopian clown wants Jalan Ampang named after the Tun. Dang, we don’t name anything after anybody when that somebody is waxing strong, yes? What’s the word? Sial, isn’t it? No wonder the Tun was indisposed recently and had to beg off an event and had sent his gracious wife, an admirable lady, to grace the event. And of course you do not name a hospital after a living person….a hospital where the fung-shui is always bad. I wouldn’t accept that, would you? Yet, I am told, up north it was allowed to happen!

Hi Zorro,

I notice you always grace your post with funny graphics. I too want to do research like you and learn how to do graphics like you. Can you tell us how?

Now for a little apple polishing. You graphics are very nice and funny. I love them (but this bit of apple polishing is sincere).

Bro, sorry if I may go off on a tangent.

“if the queen is higher than the first lady, meaning someone is more prominent than the “people first (performance now)”?”

If something or someone is greater than the word first or the number 1 then what is the meaning for “people first” or that 1whatever?

Poo dah cit!!

dear sir,
I am surprised at your comment regarding the jalan ampang renamed as jalan tun dr mahathir. what is wrong with a suggestion. the man has no more power to give anything to those who propose. when you apple polish you expect something in return while in this case it not. So I think you better check what 'apple polishing'means again.

That "a bag of shit" ethiopian from cheras actually asking the son of kutty's son to expire as roads are named after dead people. Why didn't he suggest naming jibbi's pussy the same?

Pak Lah, you may be correct in what you said that "Islam promotes freedom" and "Islam is not against the culture and religion of other religions", but the Islam that is practised by Umno is totally contrary to what you stated.

The 'Allah' issue is clear example that while the Muslim world allows its term to be used by some other faiths, Umno disallows this in Malaysia. Can you explain what Umno is up to?

My only knowledge of Islam is what I see around me in this country and in the rest of the world. I read, see, and hear a lot of 'jihad', suicide bombings and killings of dozens and hundreds of innocent people, body-snatching, stoning people to death (such cruelty), catching people for 'khalwat', caning people for drinking beer, etc.

So, Pak Lah, you were saying secular human rights should be abolished and Islamic human rights should be implemented? I am sorry, I totally disagree. There is no greater evil than men trying to play God.

Internet is a tool to bring down BN, as we are tired of the lies from Bernama. RTM, Utusan and NST.

Everyday on TV we get to see Soh Chin Aun and Santokh Singh reminiscing about the heyday of Malaysian football 20 years ago, while we notice their arch-rivals South Korea and Japan are now playing in the World Cup.

Why the constant reminder of the national shame?

This is a failure of FAM whose chiefs should have been sacked for promoting only Kampung Football.

OLeOle, I am no football fan, but remembered that some player/s were charged by the little red dot for playing "fake-ball".

Asri joining Umno to protect himself from crackdown? So if he does not join Umno, he'll be labelled a Wahhabi and accused of having links to terrorists. But if he joins Umno, he will then be cleared of all allegations.

It's another Ops Lalang in the making, where clerics, students and opposition leaders would be targets. I'm glad that Ustaz Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin and Ustaz Juanda Jaya came out with their response to this propaganda. May we not be blinded and swayed by this desperate move.

I still think Operasi Lalang II is on the way. All opposition leaders might be arrested and the next general election called off. This is the safest way for Prime Minister Najib Razak to stay in power.

If Wahhabism and other 'madhabs' (schools of thought) are not tolerated in Malaysia, I suggest we change the name of Jabatan Agama Islam to Jabatan Agama Shafii.

The IGP (inspector-general of police) can simply link anyone to any organisation, and they will automatically become terrorists? And should the people believe that the Batu Caves temple and Kek Lok Si Temple might be bombed, the police can then take any action and Malaysians won't complain?

Agree fully with Ole Ole

Malaysia is still syioking sendiri with Kampung Football in the M League run by the useless FAM.
