TODAY 6 June, Vic would be living it up with us as he would have turned 58. Thomas a Kempis’ adage rings true: Man proposes God disposes. Tengku Vic left us two Sundays ago.
Our paths crossed some 6 years ago. For me it was an enriching 6 years because Vic and the delectable MsMo just grow on you. Tunku A’amash Tunku Adnan was just plain, simple Vic to us. He touched our lives. He never pulled rank and we were able agree to be disagreeable agreeably in our endless discourses over the sorry state of the country. Yes, both he and MsMo were activists, admittedly very rare amongst the royals. He was at every Bersih rally and even attempted to attend the last Bersih 3.0 but was advised against it as he had just come out of hospital a few days before 28 April. He belonged to the Special Bunch that campaigned during the 2008 general elections and the 16 by elections that followed. Before he left us he was the Chairman designate of MCLM….the Malaysian Civil Liberties Movement.
Let me end this piece with a quote from Lois McMaster Bujold:
The departed cannot cry out for justice;
it is a duty of the living to do so for them.
The passing on of someone we know always reminds us that we are still alive - perhaps for some purpose which we ought to re-examine.
I have had requests from some to tell them more about Vic. Well, VIC is what this Jim Reeves’ evergreen is all about. Every line epitomizes Vic. That is our utterly warm, unadulterated Vic:
Vic, it is your birthday today! Go have a good bash with my good friend, your MCKK English teacher, Kamalantran, and the stimulating Jane D’Cruz.
*****
Welcome to my world,
Won't you come on in
Miracles, I guess
Still happen now and then
Step into my heart
Leave your cares behind
Welcome to my world
Built with you in mind
Knock and the door shall be opened
Seek and you will find
Ask and you'll be given
The key to this heart of mine
I'll be waiting there
With my arms unfurled
Waiting just for you
Welcome to my world
Welcome to my world
Happy Birthday, Vic, wherever you are... everybody misses you!
ReplyDeleteRIP Vic.
ReplyDeleteZorro,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing. I also found this meaningful.
The departed cannot cry out for justice;
it is a duty of the living to do so for them.
- Lois McMaster Bujold
And we soldier on with purpose, yes?
Salut!
Higher Education Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin has confirmed that the decision of National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN) to halt giving loans to Universiti Selangor (Unisel) students is to challenge the Selangor government’s ability to provide free tertiary education.
ReplyDeleteThis will cause students and parents alike in Selangor to revolt against the Federal government for a gross act of victimisation. What will the federal government under BN l do next? Cut off water supplies and electricity to Pakatan ruled states to punish the rakyat for not voting BN?
Pakatan Rakyat has its own plan and solution for addressing national debts including PTPTN loans when they are in power. The federal government should not act childishly by pawning the students and taking all sorts of punitive actions to punish voters and tax payers in Pakatan ruled states.
Malaysians must not tolerate the increasingly totalitarian policy of BN.
