YOU TALK PRETTY, NOW WALK IT!

Libyan leader should not use violence, Malaysian PM says

(AFP)

ISTANBUL — Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi should not use violence against protestors who have been on streets for days in a bloody uprising against the regime, said Malaysian Prime Minister Wednesday.

"We believe that he should not use violence," Najib Razak told AFP in Istanbul.

"What is important for us is to take into account the aspirations of people...The system should be legitimate, it has to be based on support of people", he added.

People are giving "a clear sign of their demand for change and reform" in Arab and north African countries, and governments will have to take heed of that, said the prime minister of the mainly Muslim southeastern Asian country.

"The constitutional and political reforms that would be effective should be able to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of people, particularly the young people", said Razak.

Razak said the change in the region should be peaceful and he called both protestors and government forces to not use violence.

The prime minister said he has no concerns that Malaysia risks of a possible uprising. He said the elections in his country are "quite free and fair" and the government support is in increase.

Libyan embassy staff in Malaysia on Tuesday condemned the "massacre" of anti-government protesters and said they are no longer loyal to embattled leader Kadhafi.

Allow me to put together some thoughts on how to walk your talk:

First you DO what you want US to do. Condemn racism and corruption. There is nothing more powerful and motivating for US the rakyat than observing our “adequately titled leaders” do the actions or behaviors they are requesting from others. Why bastardize 1Malaysia by appointing known felons to head corporations. The arithmetic does not add up. Was Mahatma Gandhi joking when he said, “Become the change you wish to see in the world."

If you design a process like your 1Malaysia, follow it, believe in it and see it through despite Perkasa and Utusan’s attempt to derail it. Why should we get on your multi-million dollars1Malaysia train if your own people attempt to derail it…..and you make no attempt to kick these saboteurs off your 1Malaysia express.

Act as if you are part of the country that UMNO decided you lead, not always just the head of it. Dig in and do actual work, too. People will appreciate that you are personally knowledgeable about the effort needed to get the work done. They will not trust your leadership because you cannot empathise with their aspirations and their fears.

Help people achieve their aspirations that are important to them like free speech, freedom to assemble, as well as the goals you are stuffing down our throats day in and day out about 1Malaysia. It is becoming a distasteful platitude.

Do what you say you're going to do. Don’t make rash promises that you can’t keep. People want to trust you and your leadership.

Ask your cabinet to police themselves. They must provide feedback to each other when they fail to walk their talk. It is not up to the rakyat and the opposition to point out inconsistencies.

  3. It is so easy to tell other not to use violence but here in Malaysia Umno has never allowed their people to protest. Otherwise the police will use violence just like they did and will do so without any hesitation and even lock the protesters in Kamunting without trail. Just as bad if not even worse so don't try to teach others not to do what you, in particular Umno, was and still is doing. What a joke !

  5. Its easier said than done. When your power, position and wealth is being threatened then violence is being used. Does anybody remember hearing about protecting putrajaya till last drop of blood. Don't try to act noble when you use water hose to breakup peaceful protest...

  7. No point in advising him, he is only interested to be the PM. He has shown least interest in solving the racial tension that is prevalent and worst since 1969. His focus to gain more seats in the 13GE to keep ruling by dividing the malaysian populace with his mentor MM. His 1Malaysia has been derailed and no one could define pecisely what is 1Malaysia.

  10. Uncle, your blog today really astounded me because it shows after all, that you , of all people, still have hopes that things will change (for the better, that is). No wonder there is a saying in English, in your particular case:"Hope springs eternal", no?

  19. Crowd control is NOT violence as oppose to Libyan live bullet and fighter jets missiles. So it is legitimate ways to control crowd with water canon, tear gases and baton.
