What's the fuss about? Sometime last month, two insignificant MPs said that all images of Christ, Mary and the Cross should be taken down from the Mission Schools and that those schools are funded by the Vatican among other accusations. Of course the MSM did not report this bit. Lucia of Mental Jog published the full Hansard transcript in her blog. I picked this up and blogged about it on 28 November. Comments came in fast and furious, but I attribute this reaction from the Government was primarily because these two kucing-kurat MPs infuriated a lady blogger who blogs at http://www.daysofturmoil.blogspot.com/, thus the title of this posting.

To do justice to this gripping piece I produce her posting - verbatim, unexpurgated:
Sunday 25 November 2007 she wrote:

This is going to be a semi-political post that might or might not get me thrown into ISA but I am willing to take the risk because I am pissed off. Indeed, I am.
I have long given up in reading the newspapers and watching the news because in
Apparently in the Parliament, some exceedingly brilliant gentleman, the representative of Parit Sulong (where?) have nothing to do with his time and nothing to do in his community that he had to point out that mission schools in Malaysia, such as Convent, La Salle and Methodist have crosses and statues representing the Christian faith in them. These crosses and statues must be demolished.
Well no shit Sherlock.
Its called mission schools. Built by the British back when they invaded
Also he pointed out that these schools have strong Christian influences and apparently sing "church songs" during school assembly.(FYI: Those are hymns, not songs). And shock and horror!!- apparently Malay-Muslim parents send their children to these school as well!! What is the world coming to?!!
Then his sidekick, an even more incredible genius of a man, the representative from Sri Gading (bitch, again - from where?) have to butt in and mentioned that apparently "a father have alerted him that these missionary schools are not close during Raya". Raya is Eid Mubarak; as in the main festival celebrated by Muslims. Bear in mind,
Not close during Raya? Right....
Ok listen up geniuses, I am a Malay woman. A Muslim-Malay woman and my parents sent me to be educated in SRK. Convent Klang and then, oh nooo they didn't stop there. They then sent me to my high school: SMK. Convent Klang. That's right bitch, I'm a Convent girl. A Muslim-Malay woman educated the Convent way.
When I went there, there was never a moment where we were made to sing...what did you called it again...right "church songs" during assembly. We did read prayers but it was the Islamic prayer that we read weekly at the assembly while the other students who weren't Muslims stood in silence of respect to it. Did they other students have parents alerting the Parliament members about how the have to stand in silence when the Muslims were saying their prayers? No. Perhaps its a little thing called religious sensitivity or maybe because they were shit scared of idiots like you who are in the Parliament talking about Islamic supremacy.
This is a pic of SRK. Convent Klang. As off 2007 the school is 79 years old making it 29 years older than
Also calling into the demolishing of the crosses and Christianity artifacts. Where I went to school, we no longer have a church in it. The church have been converted into the hall and where the altar where the people used to pray, a stage have built over it. There were no crosses at all though on the walls where they used to hang, one can see the outline of Jesus Christ. When the school was repainted, all that gone missing. So what is there to demolish? We do have a giant cross in front of the school but it never bothered us. It is a part of the British/Malaya heritage, it is a part of Malaysian history. Demolish that? Demolish a part of our country's history just because you are an uneducated prick that have no religious tolerance?
Fuck you.
You are not above history.
And then about the 'Raya' comment....Dude, that shit is not just stupid. It is BEYOND stupid, I don't even have a word to comment on that because seriously, you have created a whole new level of stupidity here. What kind of BS is that, that the school is not closed during Raya? You think that there would be no heavy media coverage of that if that ever happened? Stop talking mindless shit. It is embarrassing. If anything at all, Convent gave more holidays. We get day off during Good Friday while the other kids go to their non-mission school. You don't hear no one complaining because who would say no to a day off?
Oh look ma! Christian architecture! Tear down the school now!
These mission schools, Convent,
The Constantly Dramatic One is all about school pride after all.
Religion is a set of beliefs. You choose what to believe. Just because you think your religion is better than other peoples' does not give you the right to condemn and push your religion onto them.
Last time I checked, we promote this country to the outside world as a country where people of different races live harmoniously and without conflict. Last time I checked, we are a country that is proud of our religious diversity and sensitivity. Last time I checked, this country wasn't run by a bunch of idiots with the Taliban-mentality.
But we all know that's all bullshit right?
uncle B,
ReplyDeletelook at constant drama go. she said her piece extremely well, and i am so with you and her.
this parit sulong baarger's whatever-fuck-his-name remarks, can be channeled exactly there, the blardy longkang.
Woh, Danny boy....its 2:26am...time to beddy-bye big man. These guys make me angry. When I am angry I drink too much and when I drink too much I become happy and wait for some bladdy bugger to make me angry again...this thing goes round and round...getting giddy...not the drinks, you bet. Good night....I am hitting the sack now. Shall I bungkus some mee rebus from Maria for you tomorrow? No problem that one.OK I'll do just that. Ciao.
ReplyDeleteWow...I didn't know that this made such an impact. I am glad that they wont demolish Mission School indentities now, or so they say...
ReplyDeleteBut wow, again when I wrote this piece I was just royally pissed off and wanted to bitch. I didn't know that it would attract such attention.
But in anyways if I have helped in any way by being simply me, as in dramatic and bitchy then that is indeed a great thing. Besides school pride, The Constantly Dramatic One is also all about team work.

ReplyDeleteREPORT THEM
At a press conference, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz urged those offended by the remarks to lodge a police report against the parliamentarians involved.
"The statements were made when no major issue was being debated. Anyone offended by their remarks can lodge a police report. They have a right to report them," he said.
Saying that no action will be taken against the duo until a complaint is made, Nazri said: "The MPs are not above the law. A seditious statement made in Parliament will be published and once published, the public has the right to complain."
He also assured that the Sedition Act applies to everyone and that the government will not condone any seditious statement by parliamentarians.
"I am colour blind when it comes to this," he added.
However, by convention, parliamentarians have immunity for remarks made in the House.

why all the bloggings and ramblings ? truly someone should make a police report cos those 2 have uttered seditious words and shud be jailed accordingly. Action speaks louder han words so plse Zorro get someone to report TQ , or you do it yourself or yr blog title shud be changed to
ReplyDeleteZorro Trumpet Ultrasonic Un-action !
make a police report? well, to let it gather dust afterall how many reports have been made against such similar morons with no action taken? how about the balan reports against lingam in the lingamgate? any action taken?
ReplyDeleteby the way, the cops would only move in lightning speed is when some umno goons or ministers make some reports. remember the report by mohd x2 against RPK? remember the OSA by Samy on tolls?
are you still surprise with the rapid rise in crimes with such kind of attitude from the cops?
Anon 9:34.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your suggestion. However you need to be aware that Parliamentarians enjoy that immunity that some of them use unscrupulously and with impunity. So it is futile to make police reports when you know for sure that nothing will be done. I, for one will not court publicity of this nature, unless it will have its intended impact. Why do you think Nazri was so quick with the double-speak about being color-blind on such issues.and advising a police report. The government, should act and not hypocritically leave it to the rakyak to make such reports. Think back to Operation Lalang, the lightning speed of its execution.
As to the sobriquet "ultrasonic" I do not accept this. I want whatever I say to be heard....by humans and not reserved for the animal kingdom nd can we change "un-action" to inaction? Probably if I get angry, drink more beer and go make a drunken report.....that way Zorro may turn into ZERO!!!!!!

ReplyDeletejust a thought zorro, when 300 over people gathered at siblin, thinking that azhar mansor was coming in to convert(?) the people..why didn't the police disperse them?
when they hurled insults that they want to burn the church and what not..why didn't our ever-efficient police spray tear gas at them?
it's all so unfair..!
Actually, I wonder who is tolerating who when it comes to religion.

another whole load of rubbish. The "church songs" they sang were their school anthem. "Not closed during raya", they are closed for every Muslim celebration. I can attest to this, my kids going to Convent now too. Stupidity doesnt seem to have any limit with these people. When I spoke to the Convent headmistress on why there was no expansion (they only have 2 classes to one standard, I was told the school is a heritage and this is the agreement with the British Government, to maintain the heritage and not destroy it. We should be damn proud of these schools as they have a very long history.
ReplyDelete..but then, we are talking about demented, misinformed and very shallow people, therefore reasoning with them is talking to the wall.

ReplyDeletenothing to get excited over. Erection coming ..oops sorry..elections coming....so you got to get noticed. These two hobos were sleeping since 2004 when they got elected into Badawi's parliament. Next election coming and they got to get noticed, right? Otehrwise they may not be picked for nomination. Now with this even their division cannot ignore them. You just got to expect more of the UMNO goons who have not been heard from the last 3 years making all kinds of noise that will get them the due attention.
The question I want to ask is why the delay in the retort when these statements were made in October. And only now almost 2 months later, Lim Kit Siang makes an issue of it, and bloggers are picking up the story.
racism and marginalization of certain races is akin to a sore thumb.it may seems insignificant at first but that nagging pain just makes u uncomfortable and if not properly treated may worsen and wreck havoc on your body.

We dont want to say one thing today and say the complete opposite the next day; we try in our little way to be professional about what we are doing.Better late than never, I remember. My good old convent school is more than 200 years old and was Francis Light's office when he arrived ,then later became POW camp. While I was in school in the 1980's, the cross on school badge was changed to a star, the school song in English was changed to Malay but the nuns were still there. I must make a trip back to hometown and see what has happened to those nuns who live there and the beautiful chapel.
ReplyDeleteAll national schools including the missionary schools were closed for 1 week during Raya holidays except for private Christian school which was closed only for 2 days(1st & 2nd day of Hari Raya) thats is because these schools do not have muslims students and teachers. My child attends one of these school and I know for a fact there were close for the mandatory public holiday.
Anyways I wonder what could a cross do to a Muslim??? makes me wonder, anyone cares to explain?? As far as I understand it's just a symbol, it's a cross, it has no life, no one is asked to worship it, so why kick the fuss???
as I start to wonder on this, many wondering comes upon me:)

We are living with all these "barnacles and warts" but we can change all this can we. The ballot box is the answer. I do not belong to any political party...I returned my Life Membersip Card to MCA. Just vote the opposition to decrease BN majority. This time around we need to send a message for them to shape up or ship out comes the next election after this impending one. They must be made to realise that they are not invincible. We need to shake them out of their arrogance and complacency.
Adam & Eve,
ReplyDeleteI share your sentiments. Let's translate these frustrations into positive votes to send a message for change. My comments above applies. Peace to you and all who want to make changes.
My, my..such language. Tsk, tsk..where did you pick up such unchristian words? Not from the brothers and the sisters, I presume? So where?
ReplyDeleteDo we still have Mission Schools? After 50 years of independence? I thought they had been converted to Sekolah Kebangsaan? Of course, they still retain their old names like Methodist, Lutherians, La Salle, etc. After all, what's in a name?
Do they still keep the crosses, statues, pictures, etc? If they are part of the schools' historical past, I say so be it. After all, even Prophet Mohammad (Pbuh) allowed a group of visiting Christian priests to pray in his masjid. I assume they were wearing their crosses then.
So I say..what's the beef? This goes to both the provocators and the provocatees.
Oh, Malaysians, Malaysians! If you stoop to the level of those who provoked you, you are no different from them, you become one of them albeit on the opposite side.
I have critically looked thru all the comments made by your esteemed readers. One thing is clear out of your unclear objectives of your muddled up postings :
ReplyDelete1. you are not saying anything new for yours is a resounding of an overused old echo of somebody else.
2. Do you blog for the reasons to change things that needs change or are you good only to unmask the masked then go back to your beers and see how many people have seen your unmasking?
3. following 3 , what follow up actions for "justice" do you do ? ...more beers and the "I told you so" freaking joy over more beers with the other attention deficient drunkards ?
conclusion: affirmative action needed from bruder or 4ever hold yr peace.

old fart, yeah this statement was made on 29 oct but i guess at that time nobody noticed it. the hansard transcript was scanned and email to me on 20 nov, and on 22 nov, i put it up on my blog. then kenny picked it up and it spread like wildfire.
yes zorro kit siang did bring it up at parliament and the deputy education minister, noh omar did respond (as pat posted here). later on the 'culprit' himself, the MP for parit sulong respond too, to explain why he said what he said... and you know what, i guess as expected he blame us bloggers for playing up the issue! read about it in malaysiakini.
Fifty years after independence, malaysia is still not free of bigotry, racism, narrow-mindedness, religious extremism, hatred. And we tell the whole world we have arrived. We pontificate to everyone about our self-righteousness, our racial harmony, our friendliness. We are still living in a dream world. It took some guts from Hindraf members to show how hollow we are. Zorro, keep on fighting. Keep on fighting for a free Malaysia, a just Malaysia ... a Malaysian Malaysia.
ReplyDeleteBernard,
ReplyDeleteThe remarks from these idiots are a reflection of our political environment.
At the end of the day, we are helpless in pushing for a change if not enough people are willing to be political and pay a damn about politics.
Lets do more. Thanks
From an ex convent girl to another, all I can say is, "You go girl!"
ReplyDeleteThanks Zorro for finding this gem.
Frankly, during my school days, we never had a problem about religion. During the religious period/session, the Muslims would go for their Quran classes, the Catholics to Cathecism, and the other students would go for Ethics classes. I don't understand why everything is so "sensitive" these days.
On an another note, during a recent visit to Borobudur, Indonesia, I was taken around the ruins by a Muslim guide who has been living around that area since birth. He knows a lot about the ruins and the history of the ruins and about Buddhism. He told me that he exchanged "stories" with many Buddhists who visited Borobudur. The guide was so proud of being a guide for Bodobudur and of his vast knowledge of the religion.
I wish the same could be said for some of our MPs here. Learning about another religion does not mean you have to embrace the other religion. In fact, it will help to foster better understanding between these diverse beliefs.
Isn't there a saying somewhere that the more you censor, the more curious people will become and the more they would strive to know about things? One can censor, but one can never hide things forever.

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 4, 2007): Syed Hood Syed Edros (BN- Parit Sulong) has defended his Oct 29 debate in the Dewan Rakyat (Parliament) in which he questioned the display of images of Jesus, Mary and crosses in mission schools.
"I was merely voicing the concerns of the public at large. I only wanted the Education Ministry to provide a clear explanation on this," he told reporters in Parliament lobby today.
Syed Hood stressed that he does not have any problems with mission schools and backed this up by saying that his eldest daughter used to study in the Batu Pahat Convent Primary School.
He said he was not worried about the possibility of facing sedition charges over his remarks."Malaysia is a free country. If anyone is upset they can lodge a police report," he said.
On Monday (Dec 3), deputy whip and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said he had not received any complaints from Barisan Nasional members about Syed Hood's speech. He said the public can lodge a report with the police.

ReplyDeleteAfter 50years of independence, correct me if I am wrong, the 1969 election was the only one wherein opposition made good gains - but surprise surprise the "Non Malay" Malaysians went backwards - NEP, bumi favoured policies etc etc.
In my opinion nothing will change in Malaysia. The "Non Malay" Malaysians will talk big before and after the elections - but when the time comes to cast their votes - end result is predictably the same. This will go on for years - just my opinion. But hey thats Democracy - they did / will have their chance to have a say and they will stick with the incumbents !!!
Good luck to all in the forthcoming elections.

ReplyDeleteInstead of bashing religion - which is far less harmful than our RISING crime rate -
why don't these rocket scientists BASH the govt for not providing enough resources to the police force??
And YES!
I & many many MANY Malaysians are products of missionary schools.. & NO! Dear MPs from Parit whatever..
Despite (or inspite) of 11 years in a strict, very Christian school (the former BBGS of KL which is now another upmkt shopping mall!), I can literally COUNT on my fingers how many of us "converted" to Christianity despite being "indoctrinated"!
First & foremost, many missionary schools were set up with the primary (& genuine) objective of providing quality edcuation ...yes yess..albeit at the beginning (let's say the start of the 20th/21st century) they were targeting kids of christians.
All I can say is..we Msians should be grateful to ANY school which gives us an excellent education !!!
The main thing is I am grateful to my school and teachers for instilling in me the quest for constant knowledge...a thirst which has continued til today (nearly 40 yrs later!)
Can we say the same of many schools today?
Can we say the same of our Education Ministry today???
BTW Doesnt our dear MPS fr Paritwatever know that MANY of our royalties and government leaders used to do just ANYTING to pull strings to send their kids to missionary schools
Or is it that our dear MP's kids were sent there but didn't quite make the cut??
nazri said no Bn members have complained! what the shit is he talking about. trying complaining especially you MIC and MCA fellas. next thing you know, they are asked to see Najib and the lapdogs with their tails between the legs will apologise profusely. did i make it up? asked the recnt MIC from one of the hills in Tapah.

Gone. Yes, the convent is long gone and with it many memories for past students.
ReplyDeleteFrom wikipedia:
"SMK Puteri is an all girls secondary school in Seremban. It is one of the excellent schools in Seremban. The school is widely known as Puteri and is famous for its achievement in academics and sports.
SMK Convent was opened on 3 Oct 1904 by British Resident, Mr Weld.At that time, there was only one block and 5 sisters as teachers. There were only 36 students in the first batch.
Japanese Occupation
During Japanese Occupation, the school is being used as shelter for sisters and ophange from Taiping and Singapore. After Japanese left on 1 Oct 1945, the school is reopened and accepted 800 new students and the school continue expand.
New School
A new school was built because the land of SMK Convent is taken by Metrojaya for development. Development however is stalled leaving an abandoned project. A plot of land near Taman AST was chosen to built the new school. On 8 July 1993 ground breaking ceremony was done by Menteri Besar YAB Dato’ Seri Utama Sri Mohd Isa Bin Dato’ Haji Abdul Samad. The school is sadly renamed SMK Puteri."
Yes, sadly all the memories are gone. A lot of these guys are working overtime to secure their place in the hereafter and promised whatever. Sad.

REMEMBER THE CALL TO NATION BUILDING
by His Royal Highness the Regent of Perak, Raja Nazrin:
Malaysians of all races and religions need to believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that they have a place under the Malaysian sun.
1. Take personal ownership over the well-being of the country.
2. Do not succumb to indifference and apathy. Hold on to your ideals. Do not give way to cynicism and opportunism. Believe that you can make a difference.
3. Choose leaders who were earnest in building unity and did not resort to religious or ethnic posturing to further their careers.
Raja Nazrin suggested three ways for sustained and effecive nation-building.
* First, uphold the Constitution.
* Second, put in place economic and social justice.
* Third, good governance and a thriving civil society
REMEMBER Negara Kita, Tanggungjawab Kita (Our Country, Our Responsibility).
Let's build on this together.
Please forward this on to fellow Malaysians nationwide.

Hi tonixe and all
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry the links don't work here to file your complaints to the relevant authorities. The same article is at http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=561471&view=findpost&p=14532752 or visit http://www.darnmalaysia.com/2007/12/05/destroy-statues-and-crosses-mp-my-intentions-misunderstood/
Please post here those who have filed complaints. Then Nazri has no excuse not to take action, as he said in the media as seen at http://www.assuntaalumni.com/media/missionschools.html...
"Saying that no action will be taken against the duo until a complaint is made, Nazri said: "The MPs are not above the law. A seditious statement made in Parliament will be published and once published, the public has the right to complain. He also assured that the Sedition Act applies to everyone and that the government will not condone any seditious statement by parliamentarians." - Malaysiakini
"On Monday (Dec 3), deputy whip and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said he had not received any complaints from Barisan Nasional members about Syed Hood's speech. He said the public can lodge a report with the police." - The Sun
"Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Abd Aziz said so far, he had yet to receive any complaints over Syed Hood’s remarks." - The Star
"Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said MPs were not above the Sedition Act and could not make seditious statements in Parliament." - The Star
Have a pleasant weekend! :P

Bishop Paul Tan’s Call to Support Mission Schools,
In support of Bishop Paul Tan's call, “…the government and people must continue to support and encourage missionary schools to ensure that these schools contribute towards nation-building by providing quality and caring education.” Full story, http://www.assuntaalumni.com/media/071208.html
Here’s the affirmative action we can all take…,
All who wish to redress the changes made at your mission school:
1. Make a list of the changes you’d like to see redressed at your mission school. Back your appeal with Points 1 & 4 from http://www.assuntaalumni.com/media/071128.html
2. Meet the current headmaster/headmistress to brief her as he/she may not be aware on the changes made years ago.
3. Follow up with a letter (include Appendixes from Point 1 above) and CC the school Board of Governors and PIBG too.
4. Meet with your school Board of Governors and PIBG.
5. Follow up and follow through till you get the go-ahead.
6. Then, raise funds to implement them as mission schools are not fully Government funded, but categorized as a “sekolah bantuan modal” or Government aided school. This means that for many needs including school building projects and maintenance, the school would have to find its own funds as stated in Point 3 at http://www.assuntaalumni.com/media/071128.html
7. FOLLOW UP and follow through till mission accomplished.
IT’S REALLY UP TO YOU NOW to take the initiative to redress the ethos and character at your mission school for the sake of future generations. We reap what we sow. And if we don’t take time to sow, there’s nothing to reap. All the news and facts you need are at Malaysian Mission Schools News Archive at http://www.assuntaalumni.com/media/missionschools.html - one source for everyone’s convenience nationwide.
Come April 2008, it’ll be FOUR years we Assunta PJ old gals will be championing for our mission school ethos and character to be redressed. In the process, we had no choice but to garner support through an online petition as seen at http://www.petitiononline.com/assunta/petition.html. Please sign the petition if you have not done so; simply because “We are all ONE. When one is harmed, all are harmed; when one is healed, all are healed.”
See blessings in disguise in every situation and in everything, give thanks to God; including the two MPs for being the catalyst for us to champion this.
Ex-LaSallean (Peel) Gerry Alphonso has dedicated a musical prayer to all Malaysians who have helped and who help in nation-building in countless ways. Do listen to the musical prayer, May God Bless You at http://www.assuntaalumni.com/ChristmasJoy/index.html.
Please buy the Christmas Joy! CD Album as gifts for all your loved ones this Christmas season. "Message of Peace" wrote NST and listen to the lovely song A Change of Heart; music and lyrics by Gerry Alphonso too at http://www.assuntaalumni.com/ChristmasJoy/NST031222.html.
Spread the love, joy and peace. Please forward this email and let’s Walk the Talk to rebuild this nation together.
Most importantly, never ever give up. We can make a difference.
May God Bless You too – all ways and always.
And, this is written by a Muslim girl who attended a Convent school??? Complete with crass vulgar language and the vulgar pictures??? What DID they teach you at mission schools??? If this is the product of mission schools I am not surprised people would want to close them down. The worse part is that fellow mission school graduates never point out such disgusting vulgarities and neither did all the Christians here. This speaks volumes about how well you have accepted Jesus' teachings to turn the other cheek. I am a Muslim and I have many Christian, Hindu, Buddhist friends who would would not condone such vulgarities.

ReplyDeleteWhat vulgar pictures are you ranting about? By the way we do not allow aliens from another world in this blog. Letting you thru so that others know that you are definitely from some where....some dream world perhaps. Do you have coffee where you come from.....smell the coffee lah...and have a life. What the price they pay you to visit this site?
It's just one thing after another.
